I'm going on a Buff hunt in June and plan on a shoulder mount. Is there any reason to bring home the raw backskin?

I'm planning to use mine to have a gun case made...assuming that I ever get it (20 months now, and counting).

There are two tannerys here that do very nice leather tanning on Buff Backskins, you can make gun slips, boots , whatever out of it if you want.

Be sure and tell them what thickness you want on the leather. I had a buffalo hide done that I expected to be belt leather and while it's very good leather, it's leather jacket thickness. No problem, just get the belt leather from the next one.

How thick is the leather naturally?
Can you split it into two pieces?
What amount of leather do you get from a backskin? (Square footage?)
What's the tanning costs for leather?

Thanks,

Frank

Hey Rich,

Can you check the URL you provided above? I tried to check it out and an error message came up telling me to check my spelling. Thanks.

I am corrected, www.yostfurdressing.com

if you click it a second time it will show you the alternate spelling of "fur".

I specified skirting leather for mine. Two monster gun cases using Gemsbok and Waterbuck hide on tan for the middle contrasting section.

Just took delivery of a pair of "Thula Thula" boots made by Russell from the backskin of a Cape Buff I shot last year. They look and feel pretty good. They're new, so I express no opinion on how well they'll wear.

I had the backskin leather tanned, used it for panel inserts on a oak pedestal with the euro mount buff skull on top. It was a major hit with the client, good color contrast with the oak, dark leather and white buffskull/black horns.
