hello all

I just got back some boar skulls and wanted to do the backing myself, I enjoy woodworking alot!

has anyone used ebony as the back of their euro mounts? I love ebony or purple heart, I know I know, its a hard wood, thus hard to deal with, but im well vearsed in it, I just wanted to see some pictures if anyone had any euro mounts, I just think it would look very pretty!

thanks for any input or pics

If I had ebony and the ability to use it, I sure would. A lot of the old mounts in the 1800's used back boards painted black and they looked great! The only problem I can thank of would be the expense. Go for it. I might even hire you to do one for me. Wink

Might I suggest that you use African Blackwood. It looks very similar to ebony, is a LOT cheaper, easier to work, and won't split like ebony.

Just my $ .02 - adjusted for inflation.

And so if you meet a hunter who has been to Africa, and he tells you what he has seen and done, watch his eyes as he talks. For they will not see you. They will see sunrises and sunsets such as you cannot imagine, and a land and a way of life that is fast vanishing. And always he will will tell you how he plans to go back. (author: David Petzer)

Cold, I would be interested if you get info as wherever you get the ebony or blackwood might also have some hard to find African habitat type products. Keep me posted. Thanks!

Woodcraft may have some but it won't be cheap.

Try Ebay. They have a separate hardwoods section. Here's the address:

Good luck!

What kind of habitat products are you wanting? Most African habitats are constructed using items that are available in the US. African habitat is not all that different from many of the plants that are local to the states. I don't think anybody has mopane leaves or such, but there should be substitutes available. PM me, I might be able to assist.

Sorry for taking so long getting back to you. I won't have any actual trophies until I hunt next year, but with the decor in my house I have really attempted not to have that tookie, trendy safari crap they are putting out. Almost all of the things I have that represent Africa actually came from there either stuff I brought back or stuff from specialty places that I know is genuine. That said, I kill anything that grows, so all my trees, arrangements, etc. that I like alot of and just can't find anything that is truly a replica of indigenous(sp?) African plant life. Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks!
