It seems I've been bitten by a nasty bug. It's given me the fever and the fever won't be cured unless I shoot a water buffalo.
I'm just in the prelimilary stages researching outfitters etc. I'm wondering what a person does with waterbuffalo other than a whitened skull. Is the leather good? Are there other things I should be looking at. With the wealth of talent represented here I'm sure to get some good ideas.

rjrtaxidermyI've seen several water buffalo shoulder mounts that look very nice. A good studio or shop will probably charge $1500 and up for something like that.

L. David KeithBuff leather can make all kinds of quality goods. In Zimbabwe, I have contacts that can tan your Buffalo and make most anything you want, from gun & brief cases to women's purses, clutches & bags. It is a very durable and attractive leather. On our South American & Australian Buff, I'm not sure about the tanning. Your skins could be shipped home as there are tanneries that are up to the task in North America.

george roofChef, are you looking for gamefarm buffs or are you going down under to seal the real deal?
Either way, the buff leather is exceptional, but it's not soft like doeskin. It's really like cow leather at the very best with little stretch. They make quite interesting mounts as I've done both the South American and the Asian. I wouldn't touch one for less than $1800 now. Once you've done one, your price goes up very quickly. As for the meat, I'm sure there are starving people in the world who would relish such fare, but even the gravy can be tough on these critters. Beware.

Is this an Australian hunt?
Cape tanning alone will set you back $500.
There are only 2 tanners here that will do them anymore. (That I personally know of.)

calgarychef1Yes it will be Australian and to be honest all I was concerned with at the beginning was a nice Euro mount on a plaque that I'll carve myself fron a BIG slab of wood.
Then I got thinking and the leather popped into my mind and kind of got me interested too. I wouldn't mind a nice back quiver and maybe some other stuff. It won't be til 2010 so I have time to ponder.
