Are CDC,DOA,FWS permits required to import my baboon skins into the Us.Do dassies and porcupines fall under the rodent classification.Would it be better to get dassies and porcupines mounted in Namibia and shipped back with other trophy skins.I went to the above government web sites and found them confusing.

I was in Namibia last week and my PH told me that Namibia no longer allowed the export of porcupines. Not sure as far as the others go. I took a baboon in SA a few years ago and had it mounted there on advice of the shipping agent. It came in with no problems. DRSS

Primates/swine require a USDA tannery to go to after they clear customs. The others-dassies/etc.. usually do not make the tan after sitting around over there for a while and being tanned here--too fragile, about 95% that I have found..... life member of SCI life member of NRA NTA Master Scorer SCI Scorer for Rowland Ward www.african-montana-taxidermy.com

As I recall the CDC will do a check on a baboon I think it cost about $25 but that was several years ago. Also make sure as mentioned before that you have things set up for your stuff to be shipped directly to a USDA approved facility. Good Hunting,

It used to be recommended that you get a CDC permit for a baboon. If you are using Fauna & Flora in NY, they have a on site CDC inspection and it is my understanding that there is no permit needed. If using a different brokerage I would check with them.

I made a few calls to usda tanneries and was advised to fill out permit form on cdc website and would receive permit in a week.Oakman, you are correct about dassies being too fragile,so I won't ship them back.Porcupine I will mount in Namibia. Now just got to find someone to mount my cobra here.
