New to tanning furs and want to convert a deer pelt to a nice soft fur.

Right now It is in the second day with 3#'s of salt. Will Salt again in a couple days.

What is the most available tanning solution and where do I get it. Any other instructions from salted pelt to completion by those experienced w/deer furs would be appreciated.

Deke.

Hi Deke,

No personal experience tanning hides, so I can't offer any detailed opinions, but you might want to do a search for "Tanning Solutions" on this website to see if any of their products sound good to you:

(Edited to add) Probably "Tanning kits" is a better search....

Regards and good luck,

Bill

Deer Hides shed like crazy. I tanned one and also got one professionally tanned. Didn't make a difference. Hair all over the place. Have a set of gloves made instead. Check out W. B. Place, for the gloves.

Go to

www.taxidermy.net

and check out the forum section. Before jumping in with the question, though, spend some time in the archives. That question has probably been asked and answered there several hundred times.

Good luck!

Spencer-

May I ask how many hides you had that the hair slipped on? How did you prep the hides? I ask because if all deer hides slipped so badly, no one would have decent looking mounts either. They would all be bald [Big Grin]

If you need advice on how to prep a hide for the tannery just let me know. I'll fill you in so that you can have some nice tanned hides as well.

Regards - Gib

if properly fleshed, cured and tanned the hair will not slip, there may be a small amount of shedding but that occurs do to damage to the particular hide.
Deer have hair, hollow hair not fur as in wolf. The hollow hair gets briddle with age and for lack of a better word crumbles resulting in hair all over the place.\
You can buy tanning supplies from a company named Rittels, do a search on the web for their site.

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I and some buddies are going to be taking quite a few doe off of my ranch and I'm thinking of tanning the hides for leather to be made into coats, etc. Anyone have any good recommendations for tanneries to do the work from the level of salted hides? How about people that make coats out of deer hides? TIA CAT
