DERMESTIDS & MOUNT CARE

Folks, I did a search on here and from what I can discern, I do not have dermestids. I saw no living critters anywhere or the infamous tell-tale "rice Krispies" around the mounts. What other evidence (if any) is there? I did read where a "fogger" will take care of any of them and I also periodically use two products from a company called Knoblochs called Protex Mount Care and trophy Sheen. Lastly, is there are truth to the fact mounts done in Africa are less prone to them because of the more toxic chemicals used over there? Thanks, jorge

Look closely at the base of each horn. They will have eaten tiny holes in the horns and this activity leaves the sawdust. Egg casings look like tiny rice krispies, as mentioned. You never know what was used to preserve or tan your skins if mounted in Africa. Hopefully, not Arsenic. The products mentioned (Protex) is a repellent that should be used at least once per year.

Arsenic is in common use in Africa for taxidermy from what I have seen. I just cleaned and repaired several mounts recently mounted in South Africa and they had arsenic powder everywhere and the capes were like concrete plates; they were very hard to soak up and make damage repairs on. How anyone considers it a deal for their taxidermy work to be left in some (not all!I have seen some great mounts that were done in AF but generally speaking no) of those AF shops does not know or does not care the about quality. Thats my experience on it anyway. Your local taxidermist can buy and use the Miller bug products and clean and repair your mounts and also come over in person for a bid quote and inspection.

jorge, not really. It repels them. Years ago we had a product formulated in Germany called Edo-lan U. The EPA decided it was harmful if ever a ruby throated goat mole broke into your house and ate your mounts (just kidding) but they banned it. Protex is from the carpet industry and is used to repel moth larvae. Follow directions and mix with water (unless you have a diluted solution) and mist spray your mounts outside. Doesn't take much, so don't over do it. If you have moth or beetle infestions (ever) step one is use Raid Fumigators. They are far better than the typical "foggers."

I guess you can try all that stuff but you still wont be sure that you really did anything.
Miller gaurentees it for 10 years.
Also they do everything take it down repair it if it needs repairing. They replace it and send you a CD of all your mounts with all comments about what they did and what they found. Also a record for your insurance company.
Also what mounts are they? hard horn or antlered animals are less apt to get problems.

Millers utilizes licensed products to exterminate the infestations. The proper name for dermistid scat is "frass" and it's the first sure sign. If you are truly concerned with your trophy room, I recommend buying Raid Fogger's in WalMart and using them about every 3 months. Demistids are called "carpet mites" and are possible even in the cleanest home. Each year I'd also recommend another product available at WalMart. It's in the garden section and goes by the name "Eliminator". It is permethrin spray and it WILL EXTERMINATE any dermistids on your mounts. It lasts for about 6 months to a year. It is the strongest insecticide you can buy without a license. (It also works great on hunting clothes though you should never allow it to contact your skin wet. Spray your clothes and let them dry. Eliminator will withstand 3 to 4 wash cycles and still kill mosquitos, chiggers, and spiders on contact. Great stuff to have in your shops to spray the floor during deer season. Kills TICKS ON CONTACT.)
