My Alaska/Yukon mount was left in storage and the mice got to the ears and a small patch on the neck. Looking to buy a Alaska/Yukon full or partial cape as long as the cape has the ears. Must be a tanned cape. My taxidermist says he can replace the ears and patch the neck if I can find a tanned cape or partial cape. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!!!!
Respectfully,
The Senator

Go back and check the for sale section on Taxindermy.net, I saw one there for sale last week, said it was from a 70" bull.

Jerry Huffaker:
I checked out the moose cape on Taxidermy.net. The guy wanted $950.00 for it. I said thanks anyway, but its a little out of the ballpark on price. My taxidermist says 400-600 dollars tops for a cape. He is also looking for me. Thanks for your time.

Jerry,

I think your taxidermist is a bit off the mark, telling you to pay $400.00 to $600.00 tops for a moose cape. It is a high price for a scrap/parts cape and a very low price for a nicely tanned, ready to mount, cape.

If you want a green cape you may find one in the neighborhood of $300.00+, but if you are looking for a good sized tanned cape, ready to go, you should realistically be looking at $900.00+. Tanning alone is $300.00+ and you need to factor in labor time for the skinning, fine fleshing, salting, and shipment fees both ways to a tannery, which should be priced out at about $300.00. Then you have your fee for the cape itself, someone paid a hefty price to harvest the beast and a compensation of $300.00 is a mere pitance for what they put into the hunt. So totaling the aforementioned three, $900.00+ is a very fair price for a nice large moose cape.

We paid $900 for the cape below from a good friend, who is a taxidermist, which was ready to go on the form.

Cape was 38" neck and rack was 64"

One thing for certain about our industry: "You get what you pay for"!

Kind regards,
Mary
