Walking on a Zebra Rug?

I just got my rug back from the taxidermist and was planning on hanging it on the wall. I'm now thinking of leaving it on the floor because I like the way it looks with my floors. How much abuse can these rugs take? It's in a room with minimum traffic area and everyone so far seems to walk around it.

You will be OK with minimum traffic, the hair will wear off eventually, but it will take many years.

Living life to its fullest means walking on a zebra rug. Enjoy it. It will wear some over time but you will not notice it much and they still look good when worn.

Been walking on mine for 10 years - no major issue. Shoes quicken the damage though.

Walk on it, wear it out, and go collect another. They still make them by the herds in Africa.

At the end of the day it's just a donkey. There are plenty of "really nice ones" wandering all over southern Africa. Will cost you about $2K +/- trophy and taxidermy fees.

They take about 20 years to wear out so that's about $0.27 a day. That's less than a cup of coffee at home.

So what's the big deal?

Zebra rugs will dang near last longer than you, giraffe rugs, well that's a short story. Ask me how I know?

7Mag, please let me know on the Giraffe, I just got mine from the Taxidermist and it is on my office floor. What kind of problems have you had?

I'm interested in that as well, for future reference.

Mine goes from the floor to draped across a couch, back to the floor, back to the couch.

Keep shoes off of it, and I expect it will outlive you.

I have one on the floor. It gets walked on/over maybe three or four times a week (with shoes). Been there three years now and absolutely no wear from the day I put it down as far as I can tell. Should hold up for lots of years unless subject to really heavy traffic.

Mine was in a moderate traffic area and it wore the hide off and developed some holes after about 8-9 years. I think if it was very low traffic, maybe OK, otherwise put on a wall or other option.

Just please, whatever you do, don't put it on the floor as a rug and then ask people not to walk on it. I think that has to be one of the stupidest silliest ideas I've ever heard.

I have two on the floor in my den, one has been on the floor for eight or so years the other for about three. I can't tell anything different about them and they're walked on every day.

Good luck!

I have two, soon to have three zebra rugs and I rotate their use on the floor every few months. Gives a different look with each rug. tu2 I also have a full giraffe rug, but can't find an area in the house big enough to lay out flat! Big Grin

Sorry for the late response. MY experience with giraffes is they wear poorly, hair falls out and you will have bald spots that will basically ruin the rug unless you go back and airbrush it regularly and it still won't look good. Mine gets very minimal traffic and was basically ruined in short order. Zebras on the other hand are ironclad compared to the tall boys.

We have been walking on this one forever and it looks it! Eventually it will be nothing more than a big zebra shaped rug of brown leather... Big Grin
Once you resign yourself to using it as a rug, just go with the wear. As you can see, I just can't tell the kids to keep off of it...
