Where do i send a beaver hide/pelt off to get it tanned and how much will this cost? Can i do this myself and if yes what do i need to soak it in after i get all the fat and meat off/this is a thick prime winter pelt so i want it hair on? Also where can i buy this chemical stuff to tan it myself? I just wonder about the cost to have it done by a pro...it will make a nice mountain man hat!Anyone have any pics of there beaver pelts? Also do i have to boil the skull about a hour and then let it sit outdoors in clorox 50/50 ?mix a while to clean it & brush scub with borax then air out to get the skull for display or just wire it to a tree and let the bugs clean it?? Thanks for any help& info Never fooled with a hide before ...but remember hearing that Indians smoked hides over campfires, the brain tanned deer hides to make buckskin leather?

Trust me on this, use a tannery. You can not easily get the results you want (soft leather) at home. Never use bleach on any skulls. It can eat away at the bone. The best way is to use a service like Skulls Unlimited. Another way is to simmer (not boil) the meat off, degrease, and whiten with peroxide. There are skull kits available from taxidermy supply companies. It is not too difficult a project for the "do it yourselfer" Do a search on taxidermy.net for skull cleaning and you will find all the info you need. You may also find info on a tannery near you for the skin. Some companies only deal with taxidermists. Good luck.

Here ia a company as an example: http://www.usafoxx.com/index.htm I have not used them personally but as far as I know they do work for individuals, hunters, trappers etc.. and not just for taxidermists. They can also make you a hat. You can ship a frozen hide to just about any state you want. Bag it well, wrap with a layer of that pink home insulation, put it in a box and ship it overnight or second day. The other option is to take it to a taxidermist and have them handle all of the above. I would say to cover shipping and tanning you are looking at $100 or so to handle this yourself. More to have someone handle it for you.
