I'm having the hide from one of my cape buffalos tanned and want to use it for a project. Can anyone tell me what thickness the hide will be? If it is too thick, how do I go about thinning it?

I have had buffalo hides tanned & used for different articles. The hide will vary in thickness from about 1/4 inch + to about 1/8 + inch. According to what you plan to do with it dictates how it will need to be handled. If for bags, boots, gun slips, etc. it will need to be skived down to proper thickness which any GOOD leather worker can accomplish. Some things can be made from it as it comes from the tanner.

Expect the lower neck skin to be much thicker.
Should be good for holsters and such. Wish I had a couple sq feet like that now.

I've made a couple of attempts to get belt leather and it's always too thin.
