I am going to Burkina FAso this spring for lion, buff, roan etc. I usually have my african work done by Lifeform, but it doesnt seem very practical to ship trophies to SA and from W africa, and then have them shipped back to US. Any suggestions? I live in Wisconsin. I want someone with experience in mounting roan, buff etc. thanks

I am going to be in the minority here, but I would avoid all the roundabout shipping and major elements of the taxidermy costs. Ship everything back to the US, do high quality shoulder mounts on the Roan and Buff (I might even skull mount the buff) and...here comes the controversy...rug the cat. Have our own Mary Krueger do the work and save yourself enough money avoiding the full mount to pay for the shipping AND taxidermy work on the other animals. For the roan, I would simply find a top shelf taxidermist (should be one here on AR) who is operating in a large city that is also a hub through which you can import the trophies and that way you aren't shipping them all over the States to get them done and when they are finished.
If TR had shoulder or full mounted everything he ever shot, there would have been no more room at Sagamore Hill and the room would, quite frankly, not look as nice as it does.
ten, i find myself in agreement with you. definitely a rug for the lion, but who can do a good shoulder mount for the roan and the buff? I have gotten over to European mounts for plains game, but roan is special, as is western buff.

I agree that the Roan and Buff are special. You are getting some good advice over on the Africa forum and, as I said above, try to find a taxidermist in a coastal city so you aren't moving the imported skins from NYC to Utah to Wisconsin. Much better to just find a Taxidemist in or near LA or SF so they can be imported there, the work done, and then sent to you.

The biggest mistake you can even consider is rugging a Lion IMO. They are truly one of the species that must be a life size. Especially with the real possiblity that the might not be huntable in the future.
I walk across my Zebra rug all the time. I would not let anyone near a lion rug. Just my two cents.
