Gents,
I would appreciate constructive help, meaning you know it works
Here my dilemma:2 weeks ago I picked up my grizz bear carpet mount from my taximermist. It looks fine - but it smells so bad once inside the house ,I have to vent the room to breath after a while.I am confident that the odor originates from fats inside the hide,it is biting in the eye almost.I realize that tanning apparently did not stabilize those fats or remove them. Can I drywash the hide with solvents without removing the hair or compromising the mount?
Thanks

I really dont know the answer but I would say probably not. What you do need to do is talk to the taxidermist. What you are describing should not be happening.

The reason the bear rug smells is because it was not degreased, fat left on the hide will turn ransid and it will stink.
Take the rug back to the taxidermist and let him do the right thing, but I think you have a problem,no taxidermist worth anything would let a rug or any mount for that matter out of the shop in the instance that it is,put in a bag and freeze it for now.
Try to find out if the hide was tanned and if tanned what kind of tan,so you can take it to someone who knows what they are doing, but you might have a problem finding someone that will deal with somebody else F/U

I'm surprised you haven't talked to the taxidermist already.

I will assume the mount has backing on it so you cannot examine the hide closely to see if it actually was tanned. Doesn't sound like it. You can feel the ears to see if they were skinned out and earliners put in. They should be stiff.

If fat was left on the hide in such an amount as to cause this problem I would seriously be worried about the hair slipping and the life of the mount. A well cared for and tanned rug will last a long long time.

I would not delay about getting this addressed or you could lose the entire mount.
