What brand/style boots do you Northerners wear out deer hunting. I'm looking to have warm feet next year. Up in NY, I'm either stand hunting or on the ground, trying to be very still for hours on end. This is not comfortable in below freezing weather, as I'm sure you know. I currently use an old pair of LL Bean Winter Storm boots. They are quiet when walking, very comfortable, but not as warm as I'd like.

I'm looking at 2 different boots right now, Rocky Bear Claw with 1000gram thinsulate and Irish Setter Buck Tracker with 1600 gram thinsulate.

They are both lightweight, very agressive outsoles. I'm looking for Warm, aggressive traction and comfort as they would also be used for small game over fairly treacherous terrain.

Any experiences or opinons?

Get a Schnees model with an insulated rubber bottom and removeable thinsulate liner... simply the best for sittin around in the cold. Also, the 10" "Arctic" model is on sale right now.

I've got the Rockies, and find them both warm and comfortable. They're my off-season hiking boot as well, and I give them my full endorsement.

I've gone from felt pacs to Rockys. My Rockys are actually warmer than my pacs.

I have a pair of 1200 gm Thinsulate Rocky Stalkers, that
combined with some good Thermax liner socks, and a pair
of high tech heavy socks, keep my feet warm, through most
of the northern Wisconsin hunting seasons. I do have an
extreme cold weather pair of La Crosse liner style boots,
that I go for when the weather folks are talking 0 degress,
and below. But I am sure I could use the Rockys, if I
stuffed a heat pack down them.

LaCrosse Icemna or Icekings. I used to live in northern Mn and this was the "standard" boot for anything outdoors between about oh, Sept 5 and May 15.

The absolute best footwear I've had is Whites. I have not tried their cold weather boots--but they make them. Whites makes smoke Jumper boots that forrest fire fighters that live in their boots for weeks on end swear by. They are pricey when you buy them, but cheaper in the long run and they can rebuild them. Ive had Red Wing and they don't start to compare to Whites. I plan on getting a 2nd pair of them, currently all I have is their hiker model. Which is one of their lighter boots. I have had my hikers over 3 years and wear them almost daily and they still look new. I am hard on shoes/boots too. You can call 1-800-541-3786 and request a catalog. The catalog has measuring and tracing instructions as they build them for your foot. Their site is www.whitesoutdoor.com . The other footwear item I swear by is Thorlo socks. They too are pricey to buy---but several years later they become the cheapest sock you can buy. About a dozen years ago I bought my first pair. There is a caution here. You will like their comfort and durability so well you will be replacing all your socks with them. I bought my wife a pair and she too will not wear any other now. Neither of us have worn any other for about 12 or so years and we have yet to throw a pair away. I do have a couple of pairs of the original ones that are becoming candidates. My wifes job is one where she is constantly on her feet. Due to circulation and blood thinners,my feet get cold easily so I wear Thorlo socks almost 24x7,the time in the shower is about the only time I don't have them on. I don't wear houseshoes so in the house I'm in my Thorlos and how they hold up like they do is amazing to me. They make various styles and weights and I like everyone I have tried. BTW I dont work for Whites Boots nor Thorlo.

Hi,

I have a pair of Rocky Bear Claw boots that I've had for the past 8 or 9 years. I wear these boots every day during the winter season and during hunting season. I love my boots! I work as a pilot in northern Manitoba and I can tell you that these boots are warm enough out here... We get temperatures from -30 to -40 Celsius from December to March so if they are warm enough for me... they should be to you! Great boots. I would recommend them to anyone.

Hope this helps.

I'VE USED LaCrosse ICEMAN boots for years now when the temperature gets really impressive and I have never had old feet.
the down side is they are a little heavy, but you gotta expect that when you are protecting your feet in -30 for several hours.

Danner Pronghorns are a very good boot . They come in 1000gr thinsulate.

They are more of a comfortable, durable, light weight boot for hiking oppossed to a big thick heavey boot for sitting on your but and not moveing boot.
