Attractive, lightweight, usually accurate. Not a "classic" with CRF and box magazine, but rather an "modernist" with a three lug bolt, 60% bolt lift, "ergonomically-shaped" bolt handle, and hybrid alloy floorplate which houses a detachable magazine. Some people swear by them and others dis them. On balance, they are very serviceable rifles with few problems. Whether you like them is mostly a matter of taste.

I have had since 1993. It's the older one not the abolt II. I really like mine, I like the bolt throw and the detachable magizine. Some people on this board don't like the fact they aren't made in the usa, but that doesn't bother me. Mine seems to shot pretty well, if I work with the load moa or less is no problem. The only thing is the trigger. I ended up cutting some coils off the spring. I think I will put in a Moyers one of these days.
I have an A-Bolt II Hunter in 25-06 and like it. It shoots about 1 - 1.25" with about everything I put through it. I have not done any accurizing to it yet, that is just out of the box. I like the ergonomics of the bolt, safety and magazine. I do plan on sending it to HPG to have the trigger worked on and see what can be done to tighten the groups.
My brother has the stainless composite model in 25-06 with BOSS. It has been a tack driver since day one.

I have two. The floorplate rattles like hell on one but is tight on the other. Drives me crazy. I also had the one jam at times and once while I was contiplating shooting a big buck.
They are both accurate and pretty to look at. They are the Hunter models and are nice and light to carry.

I've owned two Browning A-Bolts; a .30-06 and a .284 Winchester. Both of them were shooters, but I didn't like the quality of the design, materials, or construction. Not my kind of rifle....
I had a White Gold Medallion in 7mag once. It was a nice rifle that shot well. I really like the short bolt lift and the bolt cycled like glass rolling on ball bearings greased with owl dokey. After a while that gloss finish didn't appeal to me any more and "BOSS" system I thought was so cool when I bought the rifle just was't what I wanted. The rifle did hold it's value when it was resold. I wouldn't want another one, but I don't have anthing bad to say about them either.
If you like the looks of the A-bolt I'd say go for it.

I have A-bolt II composite stalker in 7mm rem mag with 26" barrel. It comes with adjustable trigger and fully floated barrel and factory recoil pad. It is under 7.5 pounds without scope and mounts. This rifle shot sub MOA right out of the box with factory loads and does better with handloads. The bolt throw is smooth and positive locking is effortless. The detachable magazine clips to the inside of floorplate and takes a little getting used to at first. For hunting you can buy extra magazines but they are not cheap. The gun fits me perfectly but you would need to pick one up and see how it feels to you. BLR7 is

I have an a bolt in 30/06.Great rifle and a great shooter.Recommend them highly..I am contemplating one in .338 and wonder what the recoil would be like in such a light rifle.

A friend of mine bought an A bolt in 338, put a high dollar scope on it and sold it after one shooting it 5 times. He said it was the hardest kicking rifle he ever shot.
I'm on the other side of the kick issue. I have an A-bolt II Composite Stalker in .338 and shoot once or twice a week, about 30 shots per session. When I quit, it's because of cumulative cost, not kick. I imagine I could as easily shoot 50 rounds as 30.
The gun shot moa out of the box. Kicks less than a friend's 7 mm Rem. Mag., is light and functional.
I would like a shorter barrel than 26 inches, since I can't hold as steady off-hand with the Browning as I can with my Marlin carbine, and I have it in my head that the difference in length has something to do with it.
I would both recommend the A-bolt to anybody, and buy another.
By the way, I put a Pachmyer Decellerator recoil pad on mine.
Thanks for everyone's quick responses--I'm looking to refill the gunsafe and am considering A-bolts in .338 and .25-06.
As for recoil, ANY .338 slaps my little butt around anyway, and a quality recoil pad, like a Decelerator, is a must. I frankly like the longer barrels on these rifles, but do they throw the balance off at all as compared to a shorter barrel? Thanks.

I've got 2....a Stainless Stalker in 300 Win Mag w/ BOSS and a blue/wood 300 WSM....I love them both! I'm a Winchester man but those Brownings shoot extremely well. I would probably buy more if I found something interesting, something like a 7-08 with BOSS for my daughter.
I own three so far. I have a 7 mag, a 300 Win Mag, and a 338 Win Mag. The 7 and 338 are stainless stalkers, and the 300 is a Hunter. I've only worked up loads and hunted with the 7 mag so far. It shoots really well with the 162 grain Hornady bullets. I'm just starting with the others.

I have a Stainless Stalker in 7mmRM and I love it to death, the best shooting outta the box rifle I ever own and I've owned and own a gang of rifles. I affectionately call it "The Jap" I have shot 5/8" in 3 shot groups with Federal Premium 160gr. Partitions with it.
Hawkeye, I have wondered about that since my /06 can give a sharp jab with a hot load.My father has an old belgium safari .338 and it kicks, not sure what it would be like in the a-bolt weight.I don't really want the boss with all I have heard about deafening muzzle blast.

I have one in .338 with the boss system on it. It does not kick much at all, to me anyway. I have not had any problems with it at all. Took it to Africa and it did everything I ever wanted a rifle to do. Very accurate right out of the box when you follow the directions and adjust the boss to your load. The only comment I got on it that was negative was that the stainless steel was too shiny for the PH. He stuck his fingers in his ears when I shot it because of the boss system on the gun. But, I would imagine that he does that with all rifles shot or he would probably be very hard of hearing by now.
