Was out this morning before work to try to find an elk. Got up to a nice hilltop and saw smoke. Located the source as a "campfire" that was left unattended and was just beginning to spread...had spred to an approximate 30' diameter perimeter. I tried stomping it out, but we have gail force winds this morning as a front is moving thru... It wasn't truely a "campfire" but probably a warming fire..."fire ring" was very small and the terrain was not suitable to camping... Now I have to attempt to report it to the proper authorities... Another hunt ruined by some slob. [ 10-31-2003, 18:47: Message edited by: Trapdoor ]

I don't think the folks that live east of the big river understand just how dry it can get and how suddenly severe winds can come up out west. Then too, it could have been a local. Slobs are not unique to either side.

This does suck...you are correct bee. Just notified the authorities of the location and told them I would be happy to walk a fire response team out to it if needed. There were two vehicles at the parking area...I did take license numbers.

Hey Trap, if my weather is coming your way, it'll be out in a minute..... That said, hope they find the bugger. JMO, Dutch.

Dutch, It started to rain as I was walking out. I reported it and have been speaking with a response team. I gave them as much info as I could and they said they were beginning the investigation...hope they catch 'em. It wan't a big fire...just getting started, but that's not what's important. Should have never started in the first place. Now it is snowing, but just barely. We need some kind of something to break this heat. It has been so hot, as you are aware, I'm sure. If the weather doesn't change to help the hunting, hopefully it will at least make it feel more like hunting weather...

Yeah, hunting sure has been a challenge in this drought. Fortunately, there'll be snow on the ground this weekend, should quiet things down, and the elk should start moving. Hurray! Dutch.

I talked to a Forest Service Law Enforcement officer yesterday while out elk hunting in the same location. I gave him more information and he said with that info, it would be solved. My wife talked to a Forest Service official yesterday and she informed my wife that they found the individuals responsible and cited them and will bill them for the expenses for the response and fighting efforts.

The Southern California fires came within 500 yards of my home. There was a wall of fire 100 feet high moving down the mountain and transformers were popping in showers of white sparks. They say the Grand Prix fire (the one near me) was arson. The one south of here was set by a hunter as a signal fire? Just what we needed.

I always thought that this type of stuff should be taught in a hunters safety course, but its not.

You know, sometimes a person can have an accident and a fire get away from them, sometimes. But arson is often intentional, and I think that ignoriing common sense should count as intentional. when that big fire that was set by the Forest Service lady "burning love letters" or some such BS, I told the ladies in my office how I thought it should be dealt with, they disagreed. I present it here though. SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TIED TO A TREE AND LEFT THERE IN THE FIRE!!! Now, that may be a little extreme, may be. but what do we do? It needs to be taken serioiusly. I mean, we don't really want to put them in jail for arson, that just costs us more money to keep them there. And many of them are murderers, if a person dies in the fire then the person that set it is in my opinion a murderer and subject to the same punishments. But do we want them in the system costing us 10's of thousands every year? We need to become less narrow minded in our punishments. How about people like this are forced to work in reconstruction of the burned out homes, spend their nights in the jails, etc. Any ideas people. I am so sick of people showing a total lack of respect for others that I get really pissed thinking about it. Sorry for the ranting. Red
