But not the biggest hunter, either! This is my seven year-old grandson with his first deer. His expression tells the story. Not too shabby for the Texas Hill Country. I put a replacement stock that I whittled down to his size on a little H&R 317 .223 with a 20" pencil barrel, topped with a short Leupold M8 4X. The load was one of the old 60 grain Nosler Solid Base bullet at about 3000 fps. One shot at the juncture where the shoulder, spine, and neck come together dropped the buck on the spot.

However proud he may be, Grandpa is even prouder!

That is AWESOME and will make for some fantastic memories to cherish. thumb

Our oldest is now 17, but when he was about the age of your grandson, he used a similar setup to take his first deer.

His load featured the WW 64 grain Power Point at around 2950 fps and also dropped the whitetail in its tracks.

By the way, considering the drought conditions that lingered for the better part of two years, that is a heck of a nice buck -- especially so for a first buck. Congrats again to BOTH of you...

I forgot to mention that his father, my son, was his hunting guide. His dad took his first deer also at age seven while hunting with me. Kinda nice to "close the loop".

That is wonderful. Just don't get him into the trophy mode and explain that a doe is also a trophy and better eating.

Legistine actu? Quid scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Its good to see him start out with a nice hill country deer. Some of the pictures in the youth div. of los Cazadores are humungous deer that some one helped alot with the kill, leaving the kid with no where to go. After you kill a B&C at 6 years old whats left.

He is hooked - a deer hunter for life.

Damn Stonecreek, didn't you read the thread where it is impossible to kill a deer with a .223? Indeed, according to some, shooting one with a .223 is likely to make them grow larger....... Big Grin

Congrats to your grandson, son, and grandpa. Good job. thumb

Yes, I read those threads. Fortunately, this particular deer apparently spent his time surfing other sites and didn't get the memo that he was immune to bullets fired from a .223 Smiler.

Thanks for the warm congrats from everyone! My grandson saw a flock of turkeys just prior to the season and he now wants to take one of those as his next hunting pursuit.

My poor son has skunked the 3 seasons he has been hunting.. Mad

plain old bad luck and not being in the right place at the right time...

but that is why it is called hunting.. not shooting..

Seafire,

Those west coast blacktails are a lot tougher hunting than Hill Country whitetails! I'll bet if your son hangs in there he'll be able to "bring home the bacon" sooner or later.
