Cost?

Do it your self tags are $1509 plus driving there and hunting the land.

The depredation hunts are off the missle ranges, and on BLM lands.

The missile range hunts require access to the base. If you have a active/retired DOD/military ID I think you are golden. Without it you need to pay someone to guide you $1500-2500.

Private land owners usually charge $1500-2500 plus the states tag fee.

4 kinds of tags, one in a life time, depredation id card holder, off range depredation, and youth.

Call Fish and Game in NM for more information.

You don't need an outfitter to do this hunt. Depends on what you want. I took a cow that looks great on the wall and tasted fantastic without an outfitter. If you're set on getting a big bull then you might want to consider getting some help. If you're willing to hike a bit off the road, you'll do fine. Lots of oryx, they can be spooky, but unless you want a top bull, you can do ok on your own.

Good Luck

Have you thought about hunting them in their native habitat for the same money?

For $2,000 you can fly round trip to Namibia. There are ranches there which will take you on short hunts and probably charge no more than a $500 trophy fee apiece for TWO gemsboks. When you add a couple of days of daily rate, transportation, lodging, etc., you're up around $4,000 for the whole trip, or $2,000 each for shooting two gemsbok in their native habitat.

That's about equal to the cost of a guided hunt at White Sands for a single gemsbok. However, you only get to enjoy the excellent meat while you are in Africa (can't bring it home), and shipping the horns/hide home can add several hundred dollars to your costs.

Of course, it would be hard to resist staying longer in Africa, shooting more game, and spending double the $4,000, but if you'll do the math you'll see what a bargain African hunting can be.

First off the DIY tag is draw only and about a 1 in 2,200 odds of drawing

True some tags are issued on private land as well.

Absolutely and totally FALSE! I really don't understand why you say something like this if don't have the SLIGHTEST CLUE what you are talking about! If you draw a missile range tag you are required to attend a pre hunt briefing. At that briefing you are given the rules and the active hunt areas and of limits areas are clearly defined, then the next day or later that day (I've done it twice once for myself and once with my brother)you go and hunt. No guide required. In fact the last I knew it wasn't legal to provide private guiding services on WSMR property.

I did mine last march with a great guide I got threw cabelas. I would highly suggest a guide. I shot the biggest bull shot on the march hunt. The animals are getting tougher and tougher and spookier each hunt. Just my two sense. This was on the stallion range.
Good luck.
Ps. I did the drawing threw cabelas as well. I drew on my first time. It was my guides twentieth year without drawing.

Gentlemen.. Thank you for your replies

The White Sands draw is out.. Matter of fact, trying to avoid a draw entirely.. Just too iffy..

Namib is out... Too slippery a slope for me.. Can't go to Africa without hunting Buffalo, Kudu, Zebra, ect.. I'm an Africa junkie that's why the NM hunt.. I'm forced to stay on the wagon. Wink

A semi guided hunt would be just fine also.. It's always good to have somebody in the know to at least point me in the right direction..

Looking forward to hearing more..

Ted Turner will sell you a hunt on his Armendaris Ranch. You can call: E.D. Edwards at 575-894-6782. This is the number given by Neil Lawson, head of Turner Ranches Outfitting.

Mike - A hunt on the Armendaris would be an excellent hunt it sounds for your situation and needs. Quality hunt and hunting area, good trophy quality and best of all your DO NOT have to draw a tag. Don't know what the price is for next year, but when total cost, access, trophy quality are figued in, should be no more than a lot of other options. Go for it.

It was my understanding that you could not access the Missle range areas south of San Antonio New Mexico without going through the front gate of the base. Even though the fence is low, and there are gates.

We hunted Aoudad down there 7 years ago, and my father had an antelope tag down there when we lived in Socorro long before that. I have spent a lot of time in that area.

Thanks for pulling the asshole card instead of just telling me I was wrong.

Make it clear the draw hunts on the missile range do not require a guide.
Except the badge hunt. He is not a guide and is not to be hired out.he suppose to have a badge to get you on the range.
At one time guides were not allowed to offer services on draw hunts but that has changed.
Also for the badge hunt you must be a US citizen. The other hunts no problem.
The off range just pay they usually start about $2500 on Turners ranch.
I have guided it many times it is a mad house on the draw once in a lifetime hunts. Like the Boston marathon after the briefing. A hundred guy's heading in all directions that's a 2 day hunt.
Good luck.

I killed three Oryx when I lived in New Mexico. I drew a one-time permit on the range and two depredation permits. The only escorted hunt was for a single bull that was in an area where he was not wanted. A state game warden accompanied me on that hunt. I am sure some things have changed now.

Fortunately, there are enough animals off-range now to allow some guided hunts.

For those who say, "Go to Africa," I agree on the price, but I would not even consider it as you cannot bring back any meat. That is some of the best meat that I have ever eaten.

If you are looking for some kind of record bull, then it could be a tough hunt, but there are lots of Oryx that are fine trophies and will look good on anybody's wall.

Once again if you don't know what you're talking about don't make a definitive statement like you did. Real simple. I'm sick and tired of reading crap posted by internet commandos, if you're not sure about something say so, or better yet don't post about it.
