300H&H for elk?

300H&H for elk?

I just purchased a Dakota Safari in 300H&H as my PG rifle for an African trip in the works. A week later, I was presented the opportunity of an elk hunt ND in the fall. I would love to break in the new Dakota on this trip. Is the 300H&H a good choice for elk? Or would I be better served with an 338WM?

I am using a Remington model 721 in 300 H&H with a Leuplod VXIII 1.5x5x20mm power scope on it that I inheraited from my father. My rifle likes 68.0grs. of H4831sc with a 180gr. Remington Bronze Point or 66.0grs. of H4831sc behind a Nosler 200gr. Partion. Using Norma cases and a CCI 250 primer. The 300 H&H will suite you well for elk along with you African Plains game.

I was going to use my pre-64 .300 H&H with a zeiss victory 2.5-10x42 for a planned elk hunt this year.

That is, planned prior to breaking my forearm, 4 ribs and my collar bone. /sigh, that pretty much did in my big hunting plans for this season.

Still glad to be walking on Mother Earth - I'll just carry something smaller for local hunting this year.

I know it's hard to believe with some of the posts on these hunting forums, but elk are not armor plated, and with proper bullet placement, they are not that hard to kill.

IMO the .30-06 with good 165-180 gr bullets is a perfect elk cartridge for most hunters. Forget the Texas heart shots, and the current TV across the county shots, and your .300 H&H will fill your freezer with a couple hundred plus pounds of tasty elk venison.

Tough to pick a better elk caliber than the old classic magnum. I would agree it is tough to beat those tipped Barnes bullets for elk performance.

To get any significant advantage over the H&H you'd have to go up to a 338 RUM or 340 Weatherby and even then it's more of a question of do you want them dead in 40 yards or 20?

It sure is funny how much better 165 grains at 2,500 FPS in the lungs performs than 250 grains at 3,300 if it hits them in the ass.

You well be happy you used a classic cartridge. I personally use a good 180gr. or 200gr. bullet that shoots well in your rifle. I am using a 200gr. Nolser Partition just because shots will be well within 200yds. max. in the area I am hunting. If shots where longer I would use the 200gr. Nosler Accunbonds with the higher BCs.

Whatever you want to say, ideal elk cartridge.

And if you are reading this, remember, the 300 H&H was created to replicate 30-06 ballistics in Africa at lower pressures. Now, folks run higher pressures today on the 300 H&H, and honestly, I think it has become the perfect cartridge - sitting between the 30-06 and 300 Win Mag.

But of course, handloaders, can do whatever they want with high pressure 30-06 loads or lighter 300 Win Mag loads.
