Howdy,
We had a great third season Colorado Elk hunt in Unit 7, just south of the WY. line near Jelm, WY. The third day of the season we took a few hours to make a run to Jelm and make phone calls, buy a few things and so forth. The prices of goods in Jelm were substantial to say the least. One of my hunting partners was quite irate at the cost of gas, beer, and so forth. It's my opinion that a lot of us has got too accustomed to big box outlet prices and fail to keep in mind what the little guy is up against when running a Grocery, or gas station in rural America. Let's support these folks! Throw 'em a few bones when your passing through.

tell your irate buddy to stay home. he won't be missed. Not by the local merchants nor the other hunters that depend on the little out of the way places to get our grub and INFORMATION.

Well now,
I've got no problem buying some essential supplies and gas etc. from the little guy at the prices he has to charge to stay in business - I was one of those little guys myself for a short time once but, I'll be damned if I'll pay $189.50 for a fourwheeler tire in Meeker, CO that only costs $58.95 at home or $49.95 at Wally World!

Yeah, and get car, boat, or gun trouble out in "Podunk" and , after they see your out of state plates, see if they are concerned about YOU being the "little guy".

Worst of all are the game processor's in some part's. I have nothing against an honest man makeing a fair profit but ive been hosed out of state enough times to not much give a damn about dropping dollar's to support uncompetative business's that wouldnt hesitate to screw the traveling visitor.

"Neighbor price", and "Stranger price" is something that should happen in 3rd world country's, screw em I'll bring along all I need................10

The flip side to this happened to me almost 20 years ago. I had a tire "delaminating" from the inside out. It was basically self-destructing, and didn't have many miles left at all. I was in southwest Colorado. I was about 75 miles from the closest tire shop. I did find a county maintenance garage out on a gravel road. I explained my situation to the guy that I finally caught there coming in from grading some roads. I asked for a lift into town if I took my tire off, to get it replaced. He told me don't worry, stop by *early* the next morning. I did, he threw me in his truck, took me out to a good spot, dropped me off, drove into town, bought 4 new tires for my truck, changed them all on the equipment that he had at the maintenance shed, then picked me up beside the road later in the day. All that he would do was accept the money that he spent on the tires.

He *did* get some nice venison out of the deal a few days later, but I was thoroughly impressed with his generosity, especially since my truck was carrying out-of-state plates...

Gary thanx for reminding me of the times I was "Helped" more then "screwed" on my out of state adventure's. Its true that the honest people outnumber the dishonest. The times its happened to me it really burned me tho.

I should have been more balanced in my statement's and thanx again for reminding me about the "honest folk's"............10

I hope you weren't offended. My post wasn't directed at you, you just had a good lead-in for it. I know, there are some true butts out there, but I try to remember the good guys when I can!

I have always been treated great by these people in the small out of way towns. Most times I was in a vehicle with out of state tags as well. I've been treated better in rural Wyoming, Montana, Manitoba, Alberta, etc. than I have been by some of my next door neighbors.

Depends on where you are: I had imponderable car trouble (electrical system) on a trip years ago. Limped into Alva, Oklahoma and was referred to the local "car guru" mechanic who worked on the problem enough to get me on the road again, and charged very little. I remain deeply appreciative of the kindnesses I received in that community....
