HI,

I am leaning toward getting a 404 jeff, as I think with hand loads it would be a great all around rifle. I see that barn makes a 350X,I just have no clue on what it will do out of the 404j. I have heard that it will get from 2700 to 2800 out of a 24 inch barrel,if anyone on this site could enlighten me if this is the case or not I would appreciate it. If anyone has information on reloads for the 404 j that is great to. For a round that has been around for awhile reloading data is hard to come by, Thanks,Kev

One can say the same thing about a 416Rem and they are much easier to come by. Plus ammo is more available, loading data too, and brass is cheaper.
Nothing wrong with the 404 but it's no better than the 416Rem or the 416 Rigby.

Check the load data for the 416Rem with an X bullet, the 404 velocity will be similar.

Kev,

As a rule of thumb, you'll gain ~ 200 fps for the 350 gr vs the 400 gr bullets in the 404. So, I would consider 2600-2700 fps to be a realistic velocity out of a 24" 404. I'm sure if you ran max modern pressures, you could get up to 2800 fps, but personally, I'd keep it between 2600 and 2700, it'll still be plenty flat for 300 yds, and hit like thors hammer.

HI,

Thanks Paul for the information. I also do not see many other bullets for the 404J, what other bullet company makes a 300 or 350 grain for the 404J?. I also am wondering how much more fps would the 404 improve do over the 404J? Thanks,Kev

If it's velocity will be similar to the 416 Rem as JohnS indicates, then it should push a 350 x to about 2750 or so. That is a near max load out of my 416.

Kev,

I believe Woodleigh makes a 350gr SP.

I've had this on a post-it note for some time and thought I'd post it here. Don't hold me to exact numbers in case of typos or my obtaining info from old sources. Anyway:

.423 bullets:

Woodleigh:

300 gr SN, c/n 35, ~$42/50
400 gr SN, c/n 33 (new c/n is 33A), ~$42/50
400 gr FMJ, c/n 34, ~$60

GS Custom:

380 gr FN, ~$51/50

Northfork Kodiak is coming soon?? (Ray?)

Barnes:

350 gr Solid, c/n 42308, $?
350 gr X-Bullet, c/n 42382, $?
400 gr Solid, c/n 42330, $?
400 gr X-Bullet, c/n 42385, $?

Hawk, Salem, NJ, (856) 299-2800:

(They may have additional Round Tips in .423)

300x.035, ~$31
300x.05, ~$35.50
350x.035, ~$32.50
350x.05, ~$37
400x.05, ~$38.50
400x.065, ~$51.50

That's what I have at the moment. If someone should be aware of another vendor making .423 bullets I would certainly appreciate you providing that information.

My friend Ross Seyfried has used the 350 Barnes X quite a bit on Buffalo and he liked them and he has shot a lot of Buff when he was a PH in Africa for about 11 years.

I have used the 400 gr. bullets almost exclusively but a 350 gr. Barnes X or better yet a GS custom HV would suit me well enough. I think a 350 gr. monolithics equals the 400 gr. conventional bullet because of bullet lenth.

HI,

MR. Atkinson, I gave MR. Ricks a E-mail about the 404 Jeffery in particular the issue of the lenght of action and what can be done. I will went to see his E-mail,but I did look at the lenght on many 375H+H actions and according to the information there should be no problem of converting them to a 404 Jeffery. Thanks,Kev
