NEEDS REVISED. See 2/15/21 post.Moving as in no open tree stands. Cruising for herds OK. Whatever. Just don't have the patience to sit for much more than an hour or so. Open land sounds nice. Plans for guided hunt in N. Wyoming fell through a few years ago. Would like to go there or nearby. But, I'm open to any state with a decent pop of deer.
PM's OK if you prefer. Thanks if you can help.
I didn't see anything but does and no-shooter bucks last 4 seasons here.

Do it yourself or guided? Budget if guided? Muzzleloader or rifle?

There are some different options for DIY public lands and some options for private lands, guaranteed tags- guided or non-guided. Just depends what you are looking for.

Link to Vermejo in Northern New Mexico. I was there three times with my husband on elk hunts and once for just fishing.

Extremely well managed, huge area, something around 550,000 acres.

Excellent guides, accommodations and abundant game.

Best of luck on your hunt.

Update - guided is what I had in mind (thanks MC). Rifle hunt. A lodge/meal deal is preferred. One on one or two guided would be nice. Wyoming is tops on my bucket list. But, really any chance at a mature 5 year old+ buck from Ohio to Wyoming and any state in between is fine with me. Route 90 seems like a good driving route. Sorry Brent and Kathi.

Wyoming will take points, which you probably don't have.

There are a ton of landowner type scenarios in New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Nebraska where you can hunt on a landowner tag without purchasing years worth of points.

Thanks BWW.

Nebraska is right along my intended "trail". Any info on how to find someone one of these landowners with a tag in Nebraska? PM might be best.

Budget is $5,000 or less. Should be doable. I ran into this (sparse replies) a few years ago. Seems like the best hunts are kept hush hush. I get that. Nebraska for deer is looking better everyday.

Try giving Ryan a call at 605 210 1440 and see if he has any openings in Northwest South Dakota or Nebraska.

BWW. I checked Nebraska and landowner tags are for family or lease holders or landowners' siblings.

Routier is filled as are many of the other ones I explored, some blindly, many of which were suggested by AR members. Branched out south to Kansas. Both places of interest are sold out. Oh well. Guess the best ones are all filled for 2021. Many thanks to all for the leads and inspiration. PM or text anytime. I haven't given up yet.

The absolute best Mule deer hunting is in the Big bend country of Texas, near Alpine, Marfa, or Marathon..Ive hunted in most states and still prefer Texas for whitetail, Mule Deer, and Pronghorns..Deer population is the very best, trophy quality is good also. mule deer are 26 inches average and a 30 inch buck is doable in a week of hunting, ocassionally a 34 incher and thats a rare one..I base that on growing up and ranching in that area..

Hello again,

I think I'm looking more for a rec based on somebody's first hand experience of a successful hunt at a specific place. There are outfitters everywhere. I tried the "just try one" method 3 times and was not happy with the results each time. Let someone else be the guinea pig this time. No hunting preserves, no feeders, no open tree stands. Spot & stalk or enclosed blind preferred.
Thanks to all posts and PM's so far. Finders fee or a nice dutchy smoked ham, no problem. Nothing beats first hand experiences. Again, I totally understand if you want to keep your honey hole private.
Also, still looking at the mid-northern U.S. from Ohio to Wyoming along the route 80 or route 90 corridor. A dip into Kansas is fine.
Cheers.

I found a whitetail rifle hunt in NW Wyoming that I really like & that fits into my hunting schedule.
Thank you all for your outpouring of leads both directly here and by PM. I missed some dandy hunts due to sell-outs in several states, some by mere days most of which came from AR members. So, thanks for trying. Much appreciated. CB
