Anyone using 7mm Ultra Mag and if so how is the bullet performance on game. I shot a deer at 90 yards last year and the 140 gr core lokt ultra exploded with no exit wound. Dead deer though. I shoot a 7mm Dakota pushing a 140gr bullet @ 3400fps or a 160gr @ 3250fps. These fast movers are where the premium & super premium bullets really shine. I shoot 160gr Nosler partitions, Accubonds & 140gr Swifts for best performance from 50-500yds. Save the CL for the .280 or 7-08. I've taken a spike elk w/ 160grNP, complete penetration through the spine & out the front of the chest (running uphill away from me). I also used it to take my Tahr, same load, obviously a complete penetration on a slight 1/4ing shot through the shoulder. An antelope & couple of deer have fallen to the same 160grNP load from 125-250yds or so, nothing runs much over 30-40yds after a good hit. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

I think the CLultra is a lot like the HornadyIB, they peel back quite a bit & have a large mushroom, but this limits penetration. Ok for deer size game broadside, but if it doesn't exit a broadside deer, I want more bullet. If you like the 140gr, I would look hard at the Swift, NP & NAB in that order. Of course there is the Barnes TSX but I had such accuracy problems w/ the old 'X' I have been reluctant to try the new ones. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

Don't even think of the tsx as the same bullet because it isn't.I had problems getting the original x bullets to shoot and with copper fouling. The tsx however is very accurate in my rifles and fouling is virtually non existant.I have seen the results of the 140gr tsx on moose and elk and they were quite impressive.I have also used the 180gr tsx out of my 300ultramag on elk,and I couldn't be happier with the results.
