How many of you have a favorite hunting spot? Do you use the same stand every year on first day of season?
I sit in the same field every year for most of the regular season. Usualy only need to be there the first day. Just last year I got a second favorite spot for when I hunt the neighboring county.
Both spots are similar in that I sit in a field and watch woods edges and natural funnels. I like long shots so I can cover quite a bit of ground this way.

Not what you wanted to hear, but my favorite place to be when deer hunting is with my kids.
I love to hunt deer, I love being with my kids. When you can mix the two, well, how much pleasure can one man endure???

I'll never forget my son's third buck, we were in our special spot, watching a woodlot across a field. He was looking North, thinking about how I told him to wait for a little bigger one this time. After a bit he asked "Can I shoot that one, Dadddy?"

I turned and looked, picked my jaw back up and told him if he didn't, I sure as the dickens would! His little Ruger barked and the heart shot deer took off on his death run. To see the elation in his face as we walked up to the deer is a memory that will never grow dim.

His sister had her first hunt this past year. Sitting all day, watching and waiting, in the same special spot. At sundown, she made good on her first chance. Not the largest buck I've ever seen, but I could not have been any prouder of her.

I'll keep that little Ruger 257, and someday, God willing, I'll sit all day, in our special spot with a grandbaby, and watch and wait all day, just to hear "Can I shoot that one, Grandpa?"

My favorite spot is my own back yard. Nothing like taking game on your own property!

Bill,
Why would your story not be what I wanted to hear? Sounds like you do have a special spot and you share it with loved ones. What I started this thread for was to see if people are like me and have a favorite spot they use year after year or if the scout and move from year to year. I know guys that use the same stand year after year. That is popular where I live. I was curious if the same aplied for others.

I have a favorite hunting spot here in Oregon that is, fundamentally, an entire county that's roughly 10,000 sq. miles in size and borders Nevada. For the last fifteen years, most of the Oregon mule deer and elk I've taken have come from somewhere in this county. Even in an area this big, things have a way of getting rather small.

There is a single mountain that I hunted for several years running that produced a bull elk for me on the first day of the hunt. I'd park the truck at a specific spot well before daylight, then I'd start up this mountain on foot while it was still dark. By midday, I'd have an elk down. The last time I hunted it, I didn't see an elk, and I haven't drawn a permit for this unit since!

I have two. Both of them have a quality buck in them. One is in a old, logged over fir forest. I'll be hunting it again this year. I've already seen his tracks there. It's about 1/2 a square mile in size, steep, and very thick.
The other one is about six-seven square miles in size, and is probably the driest, most deceptive country I've ever hunted. It contains the biggest live buck I've ever seen. I'll bet he's still there after 9 years. The local expert says he's unhuntable. It took him 3 years to see him, and he used a helicopter to do it. He caught him on video. Very impressive. 36 plus wide by 24 plus high, and 7-9 pts. per side.
Ah, yes. What a sport. E

I like the view from my deer hunting stand but in the last 7 years I have only killed one doe from it. I have killed other deer walking to or from the stand but I still keep going back because it just feels good sitting there.

Allen, I have seen that mountain. Okay, I will keep my mouth shut or die.

I have a favorite hunting area, both here and in Idaho. I guess that goes against the definition of favorites. The local one is on public property, although most people don't know it is. In the first 7 years that a friend and I hunted it, we took 13 deer on the first day. The 14th was reserved for a special draw that I was fortunate enough to draw that year. Winter kill has reduced the number of deer drastically but I still manage one about 50% of the time. My son has accompanied me many times since those early years. He used to take his Stevens favorite along with him. He carried it empty as there are some grouse on the property. I carried the ammo. I remember him asking to hold the ammo and I declined but gave him some empty .22 cases. He kept them for several years and put them in his pocket when we went out. It didnt take too long for him to figure it out but he was very precious they way he prepared his equipment, including his empties, the night before.

My spot in Idaho is one of those places near where we hunt on our yearly mid November trip that just reminds me I am home (at least in my mind).

One of my favorites is now a wilderness area, full of mountain bikes and tourists now. My next favorite will be the one that hasn't burned down yet.

I have a double seat that I go to on a weekend evening (no public access so no walkers) when it is sunny but too windy for open fields. The seat is in a yew that overlooks a replanted clearing that is fast becoming overgrown apart from a grass ride that I strim once a year. The clearing is surrounded by tall beach which sparrowhawks and owls are nearly allways to be seen around.

My favorite place is at my ranchette in Rocksprings, TX. I love it so much, I have a picture of it on my desk at work, to remind me why I am at work and to day dream of where I should be.

I like Bill's spot. My young son's favorite gopher hunting spot is sitting in Dad's lap with his Red Ryder or Chipmunk while Dad points out targets. What could be better?
