I can get a Mark V Sporter just about anywhere for $500. Seems pretty reasonable compared to Remingtons and Winchesters if you ask me. Brian.

Gentlemen, I think what has happened to the Weatherby calibers is rather sad, and probably unfounded. I have several Weatherby's and like them all. They are 224, 270, 300, 416 and 460. I have heard the same stories Terry has mentioned, but I think they are a reflection on the person involved rather than the rifles or caliber. I have also heard the same being said about people taking larger calibers to hunt with than they can shoot well. Same result. An example is the man who will take a 338 or a 375 for plains game, and a 460 Weatherby for dangerous game, and then proceeds to miss or wound most of his animals. He would have been much better off taking a 270 or a 30-06 and a 375 H&H.

As an owner of ten Mark V Deluxe rifles, from .224 to .375, I will tell that there is not a better factory rifle made in the United States. As far as accuracy goes ONLY Weatherby guarantees it's accuracy( 1 1/2" 3 shots at 100 yards using factory ammunition). Anyone that buys a Weatherby that doesn't meet the requirements of accuracy and doesn't return it to the factory either has too much money or is not telling the whole story. EVERY Weatherby rifle I own shot better than the guarantee, most at or under an inch. You try to tell Remington or Winchester that the sporting rifle you just bought won't shoot under 2"(3 shots at 100 yards) and you'll get told “that meets factory standards”. As for what guides(PH's) and hunters from other countries think about Weatherby rifles and cartridges - I found that in Canada, Australia and Africa that the outfitters and PH's never cared or worried what we were shooting after talking to us and watching us handle and shoot our rifles. You show up for a safari with a brand new Whiz Bang Super Stopper .300 Kill Em All Magnum that you can't hit the bull in the butt with a base fiddle because you're scared of the darn thing and guess what, THEY’RE NOT GOING TO LIKE WHAT YOU BROUGHT , doesn’t matter what make it is. I just finished signing the contracts for our(the wife and I) first safari. After talking to more than a few outfitters and PH's, all seemed quite happy with our choice of rifles and calibers. Yes they had questions about our hunting experiences and how familiar we were with the rifles we were bringing. I got the impression that this was standard questions for hunters going on their first safari. If Weatherby products are so bad or have such a terrible reputation then why does every manufacture compare their product to them? Lawdog
