x5a is pretty good, probably mid-range type tag.
13b is a long shot but this seems to be my lucky year

Any year I don't have to live in CA is a lucky year.

Baker458My daughter drew an apprentice Pronghorn tag: Surprise Valley. This should be a GREAT year for horn growth, with all the precipitation.
Rest of the family struck out on deer, elk, pronghorn & sheep. Got general deer tags as backup.
Now just waiting on WY, ID and AZ!

BigChev4x4I was able to draw a Surprise Valley antelope rifle tag. Struck out on elk and X zone deer.

Aaron, X5A can occasionally put out a big buck but there are few true trophy deer in that unit. Beautiful country, but not a lot of older age class big bucks. X5B, which is just east of X5A, is a better unit for a big buck, but also a fairly tough hunt as they’re scattered here and there. I have a buddy who shot a 200 4/8” gross buck there but it was the only good buck they saw in a week of hunting.
Both of those units, as well as 015 just across the state line can produce big bucks, but the lion population is substantial in that country. I have a buddy who scouts that country heavily with trail cameras and he has more than a few photos of 2-4 lions at waterholes. It’s not that unusual to see a lion or two if you’re out there hunting for a week or so. Can’t hunt lions in CA, but the Nevada side is open year round. That country has also been decimated by fire, especially X5B. But it’s still some of my favorite country to roam around and hunt in. If a guy wants a giant pronghorn and can get drawn, it’s very good.

Not sure New Mexico is better, but it is different.
Never drew a tag in California.
I should have applied in Arizona this year. I was sitting on points, but we have family vacation smack in the middle of it.

Kyler HamannBobby,
Congrats on the Likely Tables pronghorn tag for your dad. That's a great hunt. I'm no expert on that country, but drew that tag many years ago and took a B&C buck. I saw a couple other good bucks and almost no other hunters. I'll be glad to share the little I know about the area if you'd like to reach out by email or PM.

Alec TorresSome years ago I took a 31-1/2" 4 point mule deer in area X5A. Saw a couple that were even bigger. Not so good now, I think.
