Some folks on lrh.com are wanting to do a group buy on some life size deer targets. Thought you guys might want to get in too. There's some preliminary information I'd need to get started on a design, here is what I asked them:

"Hi guys, several of you noted you would like a full size deer target waterjet cut from AR500.

I can get to the design phase based on some feedback from you.

As an example, I found this target online that retails at just under $1700:

I'd plan on a price MUCH less than that, but there are several things that need to be addressed:

1) Do you want a vital zone? We can do a "flapper" like you see above, or we can etch the vitals more accurately into the target, and even include a "stencil" that is waterjetted out, so you could easily paint the vitals a different color.

2) Are antlers important to you? This just increases size and cost.

3) How would you prefer this target mounted? Hang it via two t-posts? Two stands that hold a 2x2 or 4x4, with mounts to go on top?

4) What are you willing to spend on this? It will be fairly costly to ship and make, but will be one badass target to last a lifetime.

EDIT: By taking out the bottom of the legs, and antlers, you would be cutting a significant chunk off the size."

you may or may not be looking for advice but here is my thoughts:

figure out your cost for a sheet of AR500 steel, then figure out how many deer targets you can make w/out the antlers, then figure out w/ & w/out legs to make your best offer to guys

Hey George!

Yeah it's definitely not cheap...but I've been cutting out quite a bit. For example, our full size IPSC with scoring zones etched in goes for $200:

I think it would be much easier to make a life size deer silhouette out of plywood and cut out the vital area and hang a swinging steel plate there.Save lots of money and accomplish the same thing.JMHO,OB

How you guys like this? Rough draft sketch, but would fit in a flat rate box for $18 shipping:

Ty:
Are those bullet holes in those plates??
Ha! Just joshing you!

How's life? Married yet?

A buddy just made a barrel with head, legs n horns all painted up like a 6pt bull elk for his 350yd target practice. Whole thing only weigh's 75lbs. He had an inch AR 550 plate cut 2' sq for the bullet catcher section and painted it the same as the body for judgment purposes. Cheap and looks mighty good. Wish I could post a picture of it.
Ty, could you transfer a cell ph pic to this post? IF so, pm your number and I'll send it.

George

I think the plate you show above with the vitals "etched" is not really very practical since you can not see those organs inside an animal and probably cant see the etching at any hunting distance.

We use this 1/2" X 10" X 16" type of target for practice and as a kill zone during the Safari Rifle Challenge big bore rifle competition.

I'd be interested in something like that. A marked vital zone is of no importance to me, and it wouldn't need antlers.

How much do you think it would weigh?
