I drew an archery bull elk tag in a unit near Flagstaff. It was my second choice and didn't really expect to draw it. Now I only have 7 weeks to put a hunt together. If anyone knows of any guides in the Flagstaff area that might be familiar with archery, I'd appreciate their name and/or contact info. Thanks. bowhuntr

Bow, I had posted this to someone else on another site. -TONY You had better find a guide PDQ. From what I hear, most guides in the state are turning away many hunters because they are filled as a result of the court case. One guide I spoke with had 40 of his applicants get permits; he can't handle more than 20. Plus, he's getting calls from guys that had already been turned down by other guides that are booked solid. It sounds as if many NR hunters will be left to their own devices as a result of the court decision. -TONY < !--color-->

Call USO, I bet they can pick up the slack

Ram, Actually, I doubt it. USO didn't even have enough guides last year to provide the hunts as outlined in its contracts. I know for fact they told two hunters who had booked for the N. Kaibab that their hunt had to be shortened because of the guide shortage. As a result, the hunters said no way and asked for their permits, which had been MAILED TO USO (this is commonly what they do!) USO refused to give them the permits unless they paid for the hunt in full. So the hunters did just that, then booked with another guide, also paying him in full for his services. Last I heard, they were to take legal action, but I haven't followed up on it. -TONY

Quote: Tony or anyone... Az Game and fish used to have a list of all licensed guides in the state, do they still???? If so , is it buried somewhere on their web site?? If so, I can't find it. bowhuntrrl

Bowhuntr, I didn't think the list was there, but I checked anyway. Like you, I didn't find it. I do know the department has a written list, though, that they will send you. In the meantime, I just made a call to several of my guide/outfitter friends who know and hunt the area around Flag. Seems they're all out somewhere, so I'm waiting for return calls. The two I did get to talk to were booked already. Just so I can be specific, what unit did you draw?? -TONY

From what I've been seeing on Bowsite, there are a whole pile of AZ guys, relatively experienced in bowhunting for elk and not happy with USO, who are offering to accompany those in the "zones of contention" at no fee; i.e. they are not in any way "guiding", just offering to help a fellow hunter. I love it! Jeff

Quote: Jeff,Tony & all, I drew 5BN, can't quite figure out how since I put in for 10! I don't remember clearly, but I may have put it down for a second choice. The unit is east and south of Flag. Anyone to help with this would be greatly appreciated. bowhuntr

Hmmm, 5B North, eh? You can stay at Little America on I-40 and then roll out of bed and go hunting. I had several callbacks from guides, but only one had an opening. Unfortunately, his two camps are in Units 8 and 10, and he said he can't spread out into any other unit. I'm waiting on a return call from one other guide that might have an opening or at least know someone who does. -TONY

You can also get a list of licensed guides from the Arizona game and fish and on their website-http://www.azgfd.com/ You should have no problem finding someone who is not all booked up!

Actually, I called Game and Fish. You can't get a list from their site anymore. They send out a document that must be filled out stating that the list will not be used for commercial purposes. It seems like everything takes time when you can least afford it. bowhuntrrl
