Got a quick question on what ya'lls thoughts were on the type of ammo I should use on my upcoming hunt. I will be down in South Texas huting Whitetails, and Nailgai. I will be shooting a 300 WSM, and there are only so many rouds I can use. So I was just curiouse what ya'll thought because i dont have time to load and unload my gun, it will be loaded with only 1 type of bullet. My choices that I know of are:

300 WSM 180 gr. Supreme AccuBond
300 WSM 180 gr. Supreme Fail Safe
300 WSM 150 gr. Supreme BallisticSilvertip
300 WSM 180 gr. Supreme BallisticSilvertip
300 WSM 180 gr. Super-X Power-Point

Just wanted ya'lls thoughts on the matter.
Thanks, Ian

If I remember right the nilgai is a fairly stout animal. That being the case I would opt for the failsafe as the 180 grain accubond results have been mixed. If you were just going after whitetails any of the would do.

Definitely the FailSafe if you're going after nilgai.

I have a .300WSM and I would NOT use any of them!

Buy a box of Factory Federal Premium 180gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. If they shoot under 2" at 100 yards from your rifle, use them. BTW, they are 1" cartridges in my rifle.

Nilgai are tough so the 180gr. TBBCs will be perfect. I used them in Africa with great success. They will work on deer too and will expand and nail them to the ground right away with a shoulder shot (with more meat damage).

FWIW, I've never hunted in Texas but I've hunted in Wyoming when antelope, mule deer and Elk were on the menu. And I was shooting a .300wm. I loaded for the biggest (elk) and used it on everything. I don't believe in taking a bunch of different loads (for the same rifle) on a hunt. It works.

You may be surprised at how well a heavy for calibre, stoutly made bullet works on smaller game IF YOU SHOOT FOR THE EXIT HOLE. If you put a bullet in an animals pump, even if it doesn't expand into the classical mushroom or explode on impact, you have a dead animal on your hands.

I live and hunt in South Texas. My 'big' gun is a 30-06. For nilgai I use HE partition F/L. It's plenty. For deer I use 165 BT H/Ls at 28oofps. It's good to 300+ yards. You might use this to base your decision on. capt david :

Definetly NOT the BTs. Of the loads you listed, I would opt for the Accubond 1st & the Failsafe. Just stay of theat big Nailgais shoulder.

Nilgai are pretty tough, I would go with the Failsafe, and they will be ok on the deer as well. I since others have suggested it a 180 gr. TBBC would be as good as it gets as well.

Failsafe or the accubond. Whichever was shooting better out of my gun. If it's a toss up on grouping, I would favor the former.
