I’ve hunted all over Africa and northern Canada and Alaska but I have never hunted elk. Next year I’ll be 75 but in good health and decent shape. I’m looking for a good elk hunt under $10-11k and somewhere in the lower 48. I obviously have no preference points anywhere so cost of a landowners tag would have to be within the total budget. TIA.

There are a number of CWMU (land owner) tags available in Utah. Mst are sold directly through the outfitter who provides guide service as well. Although some are considerably over your budget, the vast majority are sold for about $8-12K, which includes a fully guided hunt for 5-7 days.

You could start with:

Name: Travis Adams
Phone: 801-785-5050
Email: bucksandbullsoutfitter@msn.com

He outfits on several different properties of varying costs. He can point you in the right direction if he doesn't have anything available. In case it isn't obvious, you are almost certainly talking a hunt next year at this late date.

The UTDWR website lists contact info for each CWMU, but it is hard to tell which ones are within your budget.

Hi Jerry:

Try: John Martin at Wright's Ranch at Cathedral CO. John Sr has bee there at least since the late 50's. His boys run the place now I'm sure, they were not born last I was up there.

OR just up the road: Mineral Creek Outfitters. They are new since I was up there, don't know any names.

OR any place you can dig up listed around Powderhorn, CO.

All that: Mineral Creek Wilderness area is HUGE and horseback. Look it over on G/Earth.

A small area around Delta has made some noise about big bulls. I have no idea what any cost.

I will pm you a name at Pagosa Springs that should know what's going on around that area.
Along the southern Co/NM state lines west of there has always had lots of elk and big heads. You can fly into Durango. Some of it has lots of heavy brush.

Best wishes,

George

Do you want a nice lodge or rustic cabins?

Wall tent/horseback?

rifle or bow?

What trophy quality are you after?

Lots of options out there, so it's helpful to know what type of elk hunt you're looking for.

Rustic cabins would be fine, I can still ride a horse but would prefer not to, rifle only, and a decent representative 5x5 or 6x6 would work. I’m not interested in a spike or just a branch antlered bull.

I just received this from Pro membership sweepstakes. I do not know the outfitter but a good price if able to go next month.

Papierski’s Big Game Hunts, out of Craig, Colorado, is one of our premiere outfitters. He has had a long time client cancel due to health issues and is selling his hunt during November 17th -20th. Price: $5,500.

This is a great opportunity for 5 and 6 point bulls in the 250-280" range. It’s not uncommon to see herds of 400-500 animals on this private land hunt. This price includes a landowner voucher and also provides a good opportunity to take along a kid or spouse to shoot a cow for an additional $1,000. This is includes meals, lodging, and guide service.

Please call John Papierski directly for this opportunity at 970-629-2266

Depending on what type of hunt you like, here is who I go with now, at a little later stage in life.
