I dont understand why the father was going to try to scare a wounded bear away with a warning shot. Wonder why he even bothered to trail it up... Hang on TITE !!

Under strict interpretation of Wis law it would be illegal to shoot bear after dark. Beierman said he reached for his “sidearm initially hoping to scare the bear away with a warning shot.” The father and son had taken off from school and work early to go hunting by their family’s cabin. “He was only five or six feet away, point blank,” he told the outlet. “As he charged, I shot to kill. I shot eight times but missed. I had no time and I never got the gun high enough to use the sights.” Before he knew it, Ryan was knocked onto his back and doing his best to hit the bear with his pistol.

I am not sure why, but something about this story is bothersome. Maybe several somethings.

Just saw this on the Associated Press wire. That boy did what had to be done. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

The son wounds the bear in the first place then during the follow up dad misses 8 shots at the bear with his sidearm from "five or six feet away, point blank". Son then shoots the bear off his father, dad "feeling" the bullet go through the bear. If that is the actual photo taken after dark of the son, dad and the dead black bear, then dads face looks just fine. Maybe a bit of poetic license used to create the story. Dad and son could probably do with a bit more practice with rifle and sidearm before venturing out after something that can bite back?

Well, presumably that after dark picture was taken within 24 hours, so maybe dad was cleaned up, but I would still expect some swelling and his clothes don't look bloody. Blood trailing a wounded bear is not something that's a good idea to try at night without pretty good lights. If the bear is not dead, then presumably it will have to be shot again and after dark that's illegal and dangerous. It looked like the Kid's rifle was an AR, presumably a 5.56 or .223. A little light for bears. 8 shots and all misses from Dad's handgun? Why didn't dad have a rifle? If dad was going to shoot anything. the starting place for what he might be shooting would be a rifle. Lotta questions, lotta questions.

350 Legend. I think I'd prefer a .223 with a 70 grain TSX at 3000 fps. I don't think I'd use a 350 Legend for more than deer and inside 100 yards. If it were me and I had to kill a bear with one, I'd be killing it with a head shot at short range over bait.

Sounds like they panicked which is understandable. Glad they killed the bear and they both survived Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

Well, I wasn't there so I'm not going to armchair quarterback this thing. Having been is some 'very busy moments' myself, I have to say it sounds like the kid did good. People sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand at the ready to do violence on their behalf

Not understandable at all. A good plan of action, good training, good practice. All stop panic.
