Any one of those 3 is a shooter, but the big boy - wow!

Did you notice how he was limping on the left front leg? And he still made short work of the one in the river.

Question - what would you estimate the live weight of the big one is?

Just once, I want to see that with a tag in my pocket and a rifle in my hands.

Just an educated guess but probably around 750, maybe a little more. Many may estimate a lot more but very few big bulls are ever taken whole and weighed.

Great video!

I have some great shots of a few hundred elk pouring into a green hayfield during the rut. Two very decent bulls leave their cows and fight for maybe 15 secs. In that time two lesser bulls STEAL their cows.

I really need to get that put on a CD and figure out how to publishh it.

Great video. Nothing like the sound of bugling elk.

I think this happens all the time and with many different species. I recall a guy wrote an article about sheep biology a few years back in which he noted that the "impressive" sheep by our standards were not the ones that were breeding. Their energy went into horn growth and NOT fighting. This is also a pretty good argument against the anti-hunter argument that hunting the "biggest and the best" degrades the gene pool. Your elk story is also good evidence that nature does not value body size or horn length the way we as humans do...nature values smarts!

And if anyone ever asks me again if elk will respond to rattling, I will show them this video.

Thanks for sharing.
