'They were nice': Texas hunters kidnapped by Mexican cartel following shootout

by Ellie Bufkin

December 04, 2019 10:42 AM

Two Texas hunters were kidnapped by members of a Mexican cartel following a deadly shootout this weekend.

At least 21 people were killed in a shootout between a cartel and Mexican law enforcement after the gang descended on the border town of Villa Union and opened fire. Authorities said at least four police officers were killed and at least 17 members of the Cartel of the Northeast died in the shootout.

The two American hunters, Donald Chapman, 62, and his nephew, Colby Williams, 30, were in Mexico for a hunting trip on a 10,000-acre ranch when two gang members appeared suddenly and ordered them to get down. The sicarios took the men's rifles and cellphones but assured them they "don’t hurt Americans."

Though the cartel members kept their weapons trained on the hunters, both men reported that they were not harmed. "They were nice to me, and to be honest with you, did not hurt us in any way,” said Williams of the experience.

The men gave their captors food and water and claimed that they were simply lost and needed to get back home. "They used us to get where they wanted to be, which was home and their families," Chapman said. "Every other word out of their mouth was, ‘No problem. You’ll be OK. We don’t hurt Americans.'"

The ordeal took 11 hours during which the cartel members even washed Williams' truck. "It seems wild, but they washed our vehicles and put fuel in them," he said. Both men vowed not to return to Mexico for another hunting trip.

The good news is they were not killed but there should be no glossing of the fact that they were kidnapped! They do kill Americans and do it regularly. Trump needs to designate them a terrorist organization so we can eradicate these animals!

Que the agents claiming all is fine if you go with the right people and stay out of the troubled areas.

I'm friends with several of these agents / outfitters but I'll be damned if I'm going to be convinced it's a safe place to go hunt. Sorry fellas.

Maybe I am a little off here but I don't find it 'nice' when someone kidnaps and points a gun at me.

And yes, they are Terrorists.

Several years ago, the DWWC had an annual bass fishing trip to Mexico. They met their outfitter at the border and he drove them to the lodge and lake. On their last trip, they were stopped and robbed by bandits and that was the end of the fishing trips to Mexico. I heard that the Mexican outfitter went out of business. Too bad as it was a great place to fish.

I avoided that outing as I had done business in Mexico City and wanted no more of the lawless place.

Sounds like the Canadian response. " They were nice to us". Big Grin Duh, they could just as easily been dead.

No demand for the drugs and there would not be this issue.
That being said I do believe these cartels are not suicidal as are the religious zealots.
The kingpins can be frightened. Perhaps they need to experience a little of that.
Currently they move about with impunity.
They advertise their presence boldly on their vehicles.
Not difficult to identify.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

8 heads in a sack stashed in Downtown EL Paso, ranches being stolen in Mexico and now out of Laredo, more killings in Juarez than in the middle East wars, over 50,000 in Juarez...MOre than a few Americans have died and just recently American Women and infant babys killed and burned or burned and killed...and in another thread on AR, claimed hunters and Mexican outfitters tell us all is well...The cartel is a shadow government that is running the country, owns the police, the army, and all the politicians...and add to that our government sold arms to them, got caught and Obama and the Democrats shut that one up..Its a mess and it gets worse every day..
