I took my course in 1966 but I don't have my card & there are no records kept from that era in the state where I took the course...Do I need to sit for another course? Not the end of the world, I know, but still... And what about non-US hunters heading out for elk, etc.?
I think most states require a hunters safety certificate, but it will depend on when the applicant was born. In most of the western states, for example, I need one. Here in Wisconsin, because I was born before 1971, I do not. You should just check with whatever state you may be interested in hunting.

Thanks to all, especially Kathi for that handy website...looks like I'm legal in every state except Colorado, which needs proof for anyone born after 1949(!).
Montana if born AFTER 01-01 1985 and a BOW ED cert required for all bowhunters regardless of age.

In many places, if you can produce a hunting license from a state that requires a hunter's safety course, you're legal. My first hunter's safety course was in 1966 in Siskyou County, the most recent was a couple of weeks ago when I took our grandson for his (figured maybe I'd learn something new too).

Seems to me that there should be a more consistant means of determining "when" you need a certificate. In WV, because I was born pre-'75, I'm good to go. But in Wyoming, because I was born post-'66, I need one? It's a good idea to have it regardless, but seems there should be a more "universal" means (at least in the U.S.) of who does and doesn't.

Colorado requires them if you were born after Sep 1949
Might want to re-check that info. this is from the Colorado D.O.W. website:
quote:
By Colorado statute, everyone born on or after January 1, 1949 who applies for a Colorado hunting license or preference point must have successfully completed an approved hunter education course
Even if you have an old Hunters Safety certificate in your posession sometimes it is not a bad idea to do it again. We can all learn someting new. My wife is going to get hers and I'm going to do it again. Might be kind of interesting. I sure as heck don't know everything.
