Thinking of going to Nebraska for a big mule deer this fall, anyone here have an personal recommendations?? Thanks. kd

I have not hunted Nebraska since the mid 90's.

At that point in time there were good mulies up in the Pine Ridge district in the north west corner of the state.

My youngest son and I hunted just northwest of Rushville years ago with a fellow named Wellnitz sp? There were quite a few mule deer in the canyons and draws and some nice whitetail on the farm areas. Unfortunately, he passed away 12 or 14 years ago. I wanted to hunt there again but his sons were only doing bird hunts the last time I talked to them. I never saw any huge bucks of either species but we did see nice bucks of both. Sorry I don't have any current info.

I do not know how much things have changed up, but when I hunted the Pine Ridge, there was a huge amount of Public Land open to hunting.

Tim Clark puts some folks on some great whitetails and mulies. I have not hunted with him, but my neighbor goes with him for deer and turkey almost every year. I spoke to him for a while, seems to be a very stand up kinda guy.

Ive hunted public land a few times in the North west.
I used too see tons of deer. Both whitetails and mulies. I never saw a truly big mulie. I did see a few 150 class bucks over the years. I returned there two years ago to find that EHD had wiped the herd out. I only saw 3 whitetails the whole time. I stopped and talked to one of the landowners I know. He said it had been real bad for the last 3 years.
I would ask specific questions of any outfitter about overall population and reasonable expectation's of buck size.

My two hunts in the Pine Ridge out of Crawford were in the late 90's which was before EHD hit the area and have not kept up with what had taken place in that area.

I live in Southwest NE, you have to draw for a Mule Deer Conservation permit in our area, it's about a one in four chance of drawing. There not many outfitter's in the area.

I live in the place that you want to go I would say try to get on private land there is public but there’s a lot of competition but also people kill big bucks on public land every year can be done either way

I think our dear numbers are down a little in general it on mule deer especially

Don't know where exactly you live, but I have hunted the Crawford/Fort Robinson area twice in the past and that country is fabulous.

Define “big”

Nebraska has some but it’s not a premier destination for what most would consider to be “big” mule deer. The liberal seasons and tag distribution make it difficult to grow truly big deer there. It’s more of an opportunity style hunt IMO but to be fair that’s how most Nebraska mule deer hunts are priced

I would say 150 and up

Don't recall which species and sure didn't pay attention to location other than NE.

Listing in the B&C 2011 records showed several heads listed in NE. I loaned the book to a buddy now, so can't check it to see.

Other than driving thru from Wyo and up N. back in the '70's I know very little about that part of the state.
