Goofing around today, trying to shoot each of my guns before I have to leave for Egypt for a year. Took a metal plate used to hold rail road rails to the cross ties. Had shot at it with my 454 SRHK, .45 Colt, .44 Magnum, plinking loads from my .45_70, my 22-250, and today, my Ruger M77 MKII in .300 Winchester Magnum. 4 Shots, 2 1/2 holes. This thing is solid steel, hardened and about 3/8" thick, wish I could take it with me to Egypt. The rifle that is.

Did the 22-250 penetrate also? It should have been close. I used to(a long time ago) punch holes through 3/16" plate with a 243 for fun. The funny thing was, it did just as well, if not better, with light vs heavy bullets. Looked like drill holes. I learned years later that penetration like this is primarily a velocity vs thickness relationship. It turns out that the Russians even developed a process to make super accurate gears by "firing" the gear blanks at an extrusion die at about 10,000 fps.

AKBman Try to cut yourself on the sharp edges and maybe you can sue the bullet manufacturer and the steel manufacturer, etc. A few extra bucks always come in handy.

That whole lawsuit business makes me sick, but hey, maybe I could go after the railroad for leaving them lying around, begging me to shoot holes in them. I am going to look into the Africa bit, as I am going to be in N Africa, just wish I could take one of my guns with me.
