Dear All,

Do you know if big game hunting (like in Europe) is allowed in the US and Canada.

If yes, which states ?

Thank you for your help.

You might find some private hunting preserves that would do it.

But mostly game is owned by the states.

We do driving hunting for deer a lot of places but I wouldn't call it European style from what I have seen.

My group did some hog drives on the Texas ranch we hunted but they were impromptu affairs.

It is legal in a lot of places the only limits is the amount of land available to drive.

Some places have millions of acres of public lands. or there can be lots of small private holdings that can make it hard

The only places I know of are whitetails in some of the southern states can run 'em with dogs. Which one's I don't know for sure. Many years ago Arkansas did. Whether they do or not now I have no clue.

Never heard about Texas letting it happen til PDS just said so.

Try to contact each state and ask: Wildlife.ark
or La etc.

Have fun if n when,
George

I was only thinking of human drivers not dogs.

If one wants to use dogs that is a lot more restricted.

Not legal for deer in Wis. or a lot of other places.

If it is hunting wild or feral hogs with dogs, that can be as much fun as you can stand. Some folks follow the dogs on foot others on mounts, ATVs, pickups , etc.
The object is for the dogs to "tree" the hog and then be called off when the hunter arrives to shoot the hog. Sometimes the hog busts free and the chase begins again.
Better than watching hunting shows on TV.

I think in the Carolinas they may still do some drive hunts for whitetail deer, I do not know if any guides in Colorado do drives for elk or mule deer.

Even the rocks don't last forever.

Thank you all for your help. So as far as I understand it all depends on which state you want to do it. Some stats allowe driven big game and other don't. Interesting.

Also it depends of your definition of driving if you are talking with the help of dogs or just human drivers and what game.

The closest I can think of human and dog driven hunts would be large party pheasant hunts. They happen all the time in the popular pheasant states.

Large party deer with out dogs happen in Wis. also. But it has been dwindling because of access issues.

But there are large areas of public ground that it is still done on.

I think in PA. driven bear hunts are done with out dogs.

Having it done for hire is a whole different matter.

The problem rises from the requirement to tag each big game animal. You would run out of tags very quickly.

I grew up in PA:

deer & bear are very popular to do with humans as drivers.

we do a mix of private & public lands, no real issue of running out of tags as it's not a guaranteed thing.

max hunting party is 25 people so have to split up as needed by how many you have the terrain you are driving and the terrain the others are watching to try and cover what you can. animals will slip back between drivers, will lay and let the drivers walk right past them, flush out the sides, flush up past the watchers. some of our mountain drives the drivers actually have a better chance because of how we will drive a particular piece of ground
