8mman - I am soon going to be working up a 200 grain Barnes X load. What powder would you recomend in the 8x57? I'll be very interested to see the results of your post. Good shooting DD

I won't quote you weights but I will say that extensive use and experimentation with the 8x57 and 7x57 has convinced me that H414 is the only powder worth recording in said calibers, it will get you and extra 100 to 200 FPS over any other powder in the 8mm and 7mm. In my long throated Brnos M-21 and 22 I'm so far beyond book max it scares the uneducated..and some of thoes cases I have loaded 14 and 15 times....go figure.... The reloading manuals are very carefull with all Metrics as I suppose there are a lot of soft actions about..or so they claim...but even when using a disclaimer they still load that powder way under max for the guns I have...Of course a long throat is the equivelent of improving a case..I can seat a 250 Woodleigh to the base of the neck, so thats one long throat... That said allways start 10% below book and work up from there.... ------------------

Just recieved my m98/29 Persian back from Accuracy Arms in Anchorage. I had the 'smith lengthen the throat 0.300" as it was very short throated. I can now seat the 220 grain Hornady to the base of the neck. Not quite what Ray is doing but this will at least allow me to use the case that is there. I am loading some up and will be shooting this weekend so I will let you know.

Roger, With your gun see how far up the ladder you can go with H414 and email me, we can compare notes and velocitys....i suspect you will go in shock at the velocity with that powder! ------------------

thanks every one. I do not have very many 220gr + loads yet. I have put this message on 4 boards now and this is the first I have gotten any reply from. Deerdogs, I have found that IRM 4350 works very well with the 200gr Nosler partritions. with 52grs it pushes it almost 2700 fps.! this is a great load for elk (far out does the 06)and I would belive you could get similer results. just besure to start 15% lower.

Hi Ray A. and others: How on earth do you seat the 250 grain Woodleigh int the 8x57 and keep length short enough to work through the magazine? Or do you just load singly? I like the idea of the 250 gr bullet since it might be possible to drive it up to 2400 fps making it the moral equivalent of the 318 Westley Richards. Unfortunately, no one makes a proper 227 grain SPRN bullet for 8x57 anymore. Norma was the last one but MEN did make a very short run of these bullets for their 8x75RS. I bet that if you wrote Norma they would be able to send you data for this bullet in the 8x57JS. 8mman, I certainly hope that you treat ALL variants of this round, including the 8x57J, JR, JS and JRS as well as the poopy US loads.
