While I understand the fee - no I wouldn't do it.

First if it wasn't part of the deal up front then that's that.

Secondly lets go ahead and get the penalty for shooting a moose, bear, eagle, horse, cow, or F250 too, I mean just in case. And oh BTW I won't be shooting any of those either.

And as you are well known in these hunting circles , I'd say Im bringing the fee along in cash and my tip or not and if I don't see a 150 I'll be bringing both home.

I would add that its a poor way to start your relationship and hunt. I know they will come with it's their standard practice and I would say yes and not paying until I have made a confirmed mistake is MY standard practice.

Larry, send them a contract agreeing to refund you $1,000 if you kill a buck above 170 gross and you’ll pay them $1,000 if you accidentally shoot a buck under 150 gross.

Fair is fair.

There is no way in hell that I would pay it ahead of time or even allow them to hold it. But I only hunt with folks that I trust who like wise trust me. Have flown away from Africa many times owing 10’s of thousands of dollars on a handshake.

Id be wanting a refund, that's complete BS and way out of line..I would not deal with such people...

Add to that $12,000 for a 150 point deer is criminal, 150s are common as can be out there for half that or better...For $12000 you can get a much much better buck than that on a fenced hunt or probably on a So. Texas large ranch..

Sounds like your up to your neck in alligators, common at Los Vegas or Reno SCI auctions these days.

There's not a whitetail hunt on the planet that I'd pay $12k for, especially in KS. By charging that, this outfitter should be showing you 170 class bucks, not 150's.

While the price for a hunting opportunity is one thing, I have to question the legality of charging you for shooting a deer.

Think about it this way..... 12K is for the hunting opportunity and would be due if the trigger was not pulled. If you shoot a deer that doesn't meet the outfitters requirements he charges you $1000. This is a free range hunt.

In every state I've hunted in, the game animals belong to the state, supposedly as part of the public trust, and can not be sold for meat or other parts. Could this $1000 fine not be construed as charging for the actual deer it's self and thus illegal?

Seems like after you spoke to the outfitter you reached a reasonable agreement and that is what matters, the problem was a miscommunication issue and glad for you that it was solved, wish you luck on your hunt and hope you take a great buck, enjoy it!

People complaining about the price? Don't pay it and wish a fellow hunter best in a hunt!

Larry, is there a guide sitting with you on this hunt calling the shots or are they simply dropping you at a stand leaving you to judge the deer yourself?

I know several outfitters who have penalties for shooting under their size standard. It seems the industry standard in this part of the world is $100 per inch under the outfitters established minimum. It’s a fair and reasonable that way if a guy sees a deer that he thinks is mid 150s and he turns out to be off by 10 inches due to the angle the deer was at. Nobody is infallible. Every experienced Whitetail hunter I know that cold hunts new territory has misjudged a deer or two in their time.

I know outfitters who’ve been burned and not paid the penalty and they all chalk it up to the cost of doing business. I don’t know a single one who demands that upfront.

Your philanthropy to DSC is commendable.

Good luck on your hunt.

I don’t think a guide sits with the hunters.

They get the money up front because they have had a bunch of people stop payment on checks and things like that. I get the issue . I do not get paying it months ahead of time. We came to a workable agreement.

To those complaining about the price, remember two things. This benefitted DSC. Further, I could hunt the entire gun season in theory. There would be a fair amount of room and board if I choose to hunt the entire season.

It make me nervous. I have made mistakes before. I am sure I will make them again .

Unless I missed it, I have not seen the name of the outfitter anywhere in this thread.

It is stated free range, but somehow I hear deer farm.
If it were me, I think I would cut my losses and accept that I gave DSC a donation.

I have bought several DSC & SCI auction hunts in the past but quit doing so about 15 years ago as not a single one didn't have some sort of undisclosed fee. Now if I wish to donate to SCI or DSC I write them a check.\
FWIW if it was not disclosed at time of auction it is not valid. Please post the name of the outfitter so no one else gets suckered.

I hunt on a low fenced free range ranch about 8,000 acres and all the adjoining properties are at least as large.
We know about every buck on the place with feeders and trail cams. We watch them growing up. We do not shoot animals until they reach at least 7 years old.
My point is I suspect your outfitters knows most of the bucks on the land you hunt.
As mentioned prior if it is guided then the guide should be providing direction.

For $12,000.00 you surely are not limited to 150" bucks or smaller. You should be allowed to take a 200" buck if it comes in front of you. It's free range, not like they have a lot of money invested in breeding up big bucks in a high fence situation.

No one was suckered. It was disclosed. I didn’t remember as it was a year and a half ago when I bought it.

You have it backwards. They do not want anyone shooting small bucks. Only 150 or larger.
