Another great story. Thanks. Reminds me of a time when I was a skinny 15 or 16 year old kid hunting does a wide game trail on the side of a ridge with my Cousin & my Grandfather. I didn't get lost but got the uncontrollable shivers from over-determination. First- Grandpa got his doe and my Cuz and I dragged it back 300 yards to the car. It was super cold for our area at around 15 degrees and the wind was brutal. But I was determined to get my doe so I went back out and after 20-30 minutes ignored the shivers and then missed a doe anyway. When I got back to the car, my whole body shook and all extremities burned like fire. Good thing the 1966 Caprice had a great heater.

When I was in college, some of us went to a management area to deer hunt. It was cold, severely overcast, foggy and misty. Off we go down some river in a boat. We get out and wander off and set up. I have never been there before or since. The woods were thick.

I was seeing insane numbers of deer. More than I had ever seen in my life. They always seems to be just out of shotgun range. I would move a little every so often. At some point, I knew I needed to get back to the river. The weather was so bad that I had zero clue where the sun was located. I knew I was on the east side of the river. Beyond that, I was absolutely lost. No clue which way to go.

It was very unnerving. I stood there for a few minutes gathering my thoughts. I noticed certain trees has something growing on one side. After thinking about it, I guessed that must be the west side. I moved based upon that assumption. At some point, I bumped into another hunter who confirmed I was going in the right direction. That was a huge relief.

Unfortunately, the drama was not over. We hit a submerged log. The boat motor was toast. We walked out, borrowed a motor and carried it back in the dark.

When we got back to school, we skinned the deer one guy shot by hanging it from the stands on the intramural football field.

Ah the old days when a deer on the hood (among other things) was a sense of pride and admiration.

If you don't get lost once in a while, you ain't doing it correctly.

That's half the adventure.

I have a friend that got lost in the cascade mountain range for 3 days. Lost his gun, lost his coat, lost his pack, and now to this day he will not get out of sight of his pickup.
It happens.
