Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Man you guys in a different zone or you doing archery? D7 won't start till mid-sept and I go to utah mid-October. I'm trying to get ready loosing weight and doing a bit of exercise and making sure the guns are ready. I got 2 our of 3 clays at 100yds off hand with the 308 Norma two weeks ago, just need to do some more loading and practice my kneeling and sitting shots more. (and beyond 100).

Good luck to both of you!

The A zones (coastal) open the second Saturday of August. I guess we are the first rifle deer season of any state. Wish they ran it a little later as the acorns are just starting to drop and the rut is just beginning when the season closes in late September.

34 and a wake-up here in SC. Archery starts 9/15. This will be my first season hunting archery and I already can't sleep at night because of the anticipation. Bow's sighted and ready, going to set stands tomorrow. I couldn't imagine camoing up in this heat. Meat would probably spoil before you could field clean. Been close to or over 100 almost everyday for several weeks. It'll still be pretty darned warm middle of Sept. Oh well, I'll just have to sweat!

What time of the year do they rut there?

Good Luck,

Opener tomorrow!
It's been low 90's here as the high but it's low 50's at night. That's why all of the fruits and nuts live here!
Also we have low humidity so even when it's in the 90's it's not too uncomfortable as long as you are not working too hard Wink

Mike is probably too polite to "out me" as a fraud so he hasn't reported. I failed them... we did see a few bucks and I knew of a few others, but we never got any shots. We did have a couple close encounters with pigs, but they ended up winning in the end. Mike, his son Phil and his friend Roger seemed to have a pleasant time anyway, but maybe they were just being polite.

Kyler,

I have never been called polite...I have been told I am good guy. We all (you more than anybody else) worked are butts off for three days.

We saw bucks twice. We saw lots of does with fawns. Those fawns came from someplace.

The bucks just didn't want to cooperate. A full moon and 95 degree weather didn't help.

If I wanted to "shoot" deer, I would go to TX and sit in a elevated blind and watch a corn feeder.

When I want to hunt deer and laugh my ass off for three days, Roger and I call you.

Best of luck to Tony. I hope he gets that big wide monster we saw near "Bobcat Spring"

In this hot weather "Bobcat Spring" has already dried up, but this buck was bedded below the water just over the ridge (where Roger and I glassed on the second evening of your hunt) and Tony made a near miraculous shot on him.

He got the buck just after sunrise this morning and I had him to the taxidermist by noon. It's hard to tell in this photo, but this buck is the only true 4x4 we've ever taken in 23 years of guiding in this area. I've personally never even gotten a shot at a 4x4 and my local hunting mentor has only taken two (40 years ago) in a lifetime of very serious deer hunting.

Heck of a buck for around here - it took all the professional restraint I had not to bump Tony at the shot and try filling my own tag. Big Grin

Thanks,
Kyler

Best wishes to the hunter. A true 4x4 blacktail is trophy to be proud of. I have many friends that have had great private land to hunt for years and still haven't taken one. I have two of them in my 40+ years of blacktail chasing, although my 22" 3x3 plus eyeguards is still my best buck.

Thanks Mike.

Kyler described your going away sighting of the buck and I must confess I felt a little guilty, but very pleased nonetheless.

Kyler spotted the antlers in deep grass; experienced eye.

I was the usual fun, and majorly hot.
