Put this in Am big game hunting due to traffic. I'm starting this thread while on Cold Zero's laptop. We'll keep the thread going. CZ shot his first wolf today at about 1230pm. He drove up from NY...took him about 2 and one half days due to road closure. Norm and I arrived on time on Saturday.

So far, everyone has had a shot at a wolf but me. Hopefully my time is soon.

Cold Zero will be leaving in the morning and will post photos in a few days. For now, time to talk with 2 new hunters that arrived today and have a beer or 2.

Wolf was a big male that CZ couldn't hold up for picture. I'll let him post details of the actual hunt. I was about 200 yards away.

Doc, glad you're there safe and getting your hunt on. How is the gear performing? What did you go with for clothing?

How did you end up 'cold proofing' your rifle--the bolt especially?

God luck to ya'll, I saw that the wolves aren't really supposed to be moving til tomorrow afternoon anyway--so you'll probably get into 'em soon Wink Seriously--Good Luck!

I emailed Doc some photos. I asked him to post them.

The Wolf, whose head was exceptionally large, came out of the treeline about 175 yards down the trail from me and made a left turn. He closed the distance with his tongue hanging out of his mouth till he was about 40 yds. away when I shot him in the chest from a kneeling supported position. He dropped like a ton of bricks. The sierra Gameking took out th heart and lungs.

The temperature was -12F that morning. We were called to this person's home as a result of the family dog being eaten by the Wolf that I shot the day before in front of the children. That was the Wolf's first mistake, he should not have eaten the family pet. The second mistake was running on the trail instead of in the brush where the snow was not packed down and deeeper. His final mistake was running straight at me.

It was a pleasure to meet Doc and his friend Norma nd to hunt with them. All guys in camp were a pleasure to be around and everyone tried to help each other.

I look forward to hunting with them again in the future. This hunt was quite an adventure, just getting there anad back was part of it.

I just opened an email from one of the guides that everyone in camp took a Wolf. I guess when Doc returns home there will be many photos to post up.

Congrats to Doc, Norm and Clayton on their Wolves. dancing

Thats really cool that you guys got to shoot some wolves (you saved a lot of ungulates I would imagine). I'm getting really antsy to get out there and shoot some myself. There are a tonne of wolves around here this year and everyone that I know has been hammering them. So far timing and cashflow haven't worked out but i'll get out there soon Smiler

I'm still up here in camp. Norm and I stayed an extra day since he had not filled his tag. He had an amazing hunt today that is too long, too funny to type right now....I'll get to it when I get home. We leave in a.m. He got his wolf today on a frozen lake, and it has one hell of a pumpkin for a head....very old wolf, and very big in body. Teeth warn down.

I got a wolf on Tuesday about 10 minutes after a different hunter shot his. Then on another setup, another guy got a beautiful black female at 18 yards.

We have lots of pics to post and I'll get to it after I get home and kiss the wife's ass a bit for not being home on Valentines Day, (but I just called the florist and she'll have her flowers waiting for her at the hospital where she works).

We took our bolts to a friend's house that has all the tools to take the 700 completely apart. We degreased them, used Tetra grease on lugs, and put a coat of G96 on everthing then used compressed air to blow dry. Worked great.

I never got cold.

We stopped in Grayling, Michigan and I sold a bunch of fed primers to DMB. So, that makes 2 AR members I've met so far.

Cold Zero....excellent meeting and briefly hunting with you. Need to come up here and do it again. I'm fairly certain I'll be back next winter but only if it's -40. This warm -12 shit is for the wussies. Big Grin

I'll give a full detailed report with pics when I get home. Quite frankly, the last few days have gotten Norm and me calling this trip the most fun ever. Funny stuff happens up here.

By the way, if anyone is wondering, a 168 TTSX from a 30.06 over Re19 penetrates a wolf at full length, no problem. Entry was about an inch from anus. No recovered bullet.

I did not get the chance to use the 150 VLD on a wolf.

Doc, Happy to hear that both you and Norm scored on Wolves!!!! thumb thumb
Most importantly, I appreciate you going out of you way to buy primers for me, then stopping here to deliver them! That is HUGE!!!!!!!

Thank you,

Don

Edit to add: If I saw a Wolf being very alive at 18 yards, I'd be paying VERY close attention.. jumping

I agree on the temps. Cold builds character. I am thinking about the second week of January, 2010 and I will again bring the Tetra Grease and Kleindorst Bolt Disasembly tool, for Remington Short Action bolts. Wink

Standing by for photos. clap

No and yes. If you go sit on a bait for a week only, yes, your chances are very low. If you use bait and have someone drive the woodlots, pushing the wolves to the hunters, no, very high success rate!

Doc and CZ, congrats to ya'll.

What's the rig you are toting CZ? You and Doc look a little like Mark Wahlberg in the film 'Shooter' out there in your snow camo and all thumb

Doc, did ya'll shoot enough to make any informed decisions about 'cold weather' ammo/powder?

Thanks. CZ is toting a heavy 308, 700 with a Nightforce scope if I recall. He'll explain the rest. Temps were never "cold enough" for me to make any judgment. I did not have the opportunity to shoot during the coldest temps. We did shoot early Monday morning and I think it was about -9.

I spoke with Peter, the outfitter, about this. He has never had a problem shooting a stainless barrel in very cold temps, even -40, with handloads or factory ammo. We always left our ammo in the car so it was always cold.

I just took apart both rifles today for cleaning...took stocks off, etc.

Only my face got cold a couple of times when riding on the "skidoo" as they call it when going about 20+mph.

BTW, the guides are hilarious, but boy they get pissed when they do all that work and you don't see the wolf when it's close, or miss it!

My rifle built by Iron Brigade Armory and is 17.5 lbs, .308 with 26" Hart Stainless steel barrel that is .95" at the muzzle, McMillan A5 stock with spacer system, N.F. NXS scope in 3.5-15X illuminated reticle. I used Federal Match 165 Sierra Gameking's.

http://www.deathfromafar.com/h..._chandlerrifle.shtml

I was not worried about my stainless steel barrel rupturing in the -12F cold. I will be bringing another rifle next year that also has a stainless steel barrel.

I think the white camo is an advantage and I will take any and all legal advantages I can get anytime. It gives an extra second, or two for the Wolf to pick you out. That is about the same amount of time that I need to acquire a sight picture, and press off a clean shot. Done. clap

*Seventeen* pound rig? WOW.

Very nice on the kills, gentleman; that one has a helluva' noggin on him! I'd like a wolf skull for the ciollection some day. Prices involved, if you boys don't mind sharing would be appreciated.

Doc,

Great pix and great narrative.
I like your cold weather gear; no problem keeping warm while on a stand.
Just curious, what bullets did you guys use for the hunt? Some of the kills had some serious blood around them, like the Woofs went Dead, right now.

TIA,

Don

Don, I took 2 rifles. A 270 with 150 Berger VLDs and a 30.06 with 168 TTSX. I did not get the opportunity to use the VLDs on a wolf.

It is sub minute of man, out past 1,000 yds. The 26" barrel helps a bit, when the range gets that long. Eeker

I hear you, mine only has a 24" barrel, but it is a mid contour Krieger, and man it does it rain, shine, snow, or mud. a really stable platform, mine only goes about 11.5 lbs, that's with scope, no ammo.......
