What is the best state of the lower 48 to bag a moose? Any that do not require a lottery, just buy a tag?

Maine has ~90% hunter success rate for moose.

It is a lottery.

There are about 2000+ (?) permits that go out (90% are for resident, 10% or non-resident), but over 100,000 applications are filed each year in the lottery.

Non-residents have a long shot in geting a permit, by working the math. IF you get a permit, you have a high chance of getting a moose.

I'm a resident of Maine. I'm still waiting for my lucky number to come up. My 9.3x62 is ready to go.

Get in line, fella. Hurry up and wait. :-)

I could be wrong, but I do not believe there are any states in the lower 48 that have moose tags available except through a lottery/draw.

Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and the midwest states are all draw.

If you want a sure thing (guaranteed tag) you have to go to Canada or Alaska.

I just talked to a guy the other day who hunted moose in Maine. It took him 9 years to draw.

The Maine hunt is now up to almost 3000 permits, but it remains a 90%-10% split. Still, you never know. I got one after only 4 years and I never bought more than 5 chances a year. For each year you do not win, you get an extra chance (point). The year I won, 2003, I had 9 chances and it cost me $50 a year.

Here is the result; 50" 846 lb from zone 5 near Masardis
