Well Just found out my hunting plans for this year just went down the drain. Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on a 3rd season Elk hunt in southern colorado. Would like to know what Units or areas you would suggest. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Karry
I guess you could go on the 3rd combined season around durango or pagossa. They're already bugling pretty good now, and probably be done by then, but there are alot of elk. If you decide to go, I can ask around for some info...............wapiti7
Well obviously you'll have to get an over the counter license so if you will be doing that and competing with the masses for an elk you might as well go to the highest elk population areas of the state. The Northwest part of the state ( Meeker, Craig ) seems to be number one in shear numbers of population and harvest numbers as well, the Gunnison area is number two I believe. If you are driving from out of state there is only a few hours difference between the north and south parts of the state so you might as well be where the elk are. Keep in mind this is where a lot of hunters are as well. Look on the DOW website for herd densities and harvest figures then call a Biologist and make a plan. Some areas of the state even though are open to over the counter elk licenses will be a difficult hunt and even sighting an elk will be tough let alone bringing one home, I suggest go where the population for elk is high. Good Luck........

Thanks for the replies. I know its a little short notice but thought i would ask anyway. I found out today some people i know are going to hunt around a place called Slada(SPL), so i might do a little reacearch on that area. I also talked to someone else who said they used to hunt somewhere in 67 or 68, i might check on those areas also. If anyone has any knowledge of these areas please let me know. P.M.s or Emails Welcome. Thanks Karry
ELCaballero thats the place, i heard him say but was not sure how to spell it. I got my regs book out last night and looked it up. These guy's have been going there off and on for about 15 years and have taken some good animals. I will do a little more recearch and see what i can find out. Thanks Karry
