The 8x57 would be my choice as a fun caliber to take!

Matching the configuration of your rilfle (sights, action, etc.) with the hunting conditions is more important than caliber. Both the .416 and the .338 are more powerful than necessary, although they'll certainly kill a hog. Any of the other three calibers, depending on how the rifle is set up, are fully adequate.

You'll be very lucky to kill a hog of 200 lb or more. Any "deer" rifle will do. By the way, more hogs are probably killed with .223's and 7.62x39 than any other calibers.

Have fun!

I would take my two favorites.
Do you know what distance you will probably shoot?

I would take whatever you find most comfortable, however, that being said, I have used my .416 (rem) on hogs and it has been a load of fun! Nothing wrong with using heavier than ËnormalËcalibers as long as you enjoy yourself and are competant with your firearm choice. The .338 win mag is another good choice...... Necessary? No. Just remember that there is no such thing as overkill -- dead is dead, there are no degrees of dead..... Big Grin

Oh, and another thing, you can virtually never go wrong with a .30-06!

I have a customized P17 Eddystone with a 20" barrel and a really nice full stock, and a Redfield peep sight, that is my favorite hog gun. I have used it on numerous deer in east Texas as well, since the brush is so thick shots are pretty short. Just a real fun gun to shoot. Use what ever is comfortable and have a good time.

Well...in the bottomlands of NC I like to use my trusty lever action 30/30. Fast target acquisition and ease of taking shots at multiple piggies....

I would go out an buy a new lever action 45-70. Always a good reason to buy another rifle. But if you are content on taking what you already have, take the 30-06,300 savage or 8x57mm. The other ones listed are just too much in my opinion.

As others have said: "It don't matter". But for my tastes, if the 300 Savage is in a M99, it would go along!

I think a hog hunt is a good place for a levergun, so said .300 Savage. I would probably use a .30-30 myself.

They are all adequate but you really do not need anything that big for hogs. Been killin hogs for over 35 years. Many with a 22LR. Good 243 or 25-05 is enough.

I voted .30-06.

I just think that even though there are large hogs all across the Lonestar State, nothing will be needed more then .30 to take one down and most hogs killed weigh around 75-150lbs.

Good luck!

Are you going on a guided hunt? If so whats the place called and/or website?

Our place is in E TX, and we've hunted it for years. The largest hog we have taken was just a little over 400 lbs. We have seen some larger, but the majority are less than 200 lbs. Any of the mentioned rifles will work very well. If you are not sure how you will be hunting, I would take a scoped rifle and one with open sights. Good luck.
