Well, as many of you know, I lost my dad in January of this year. He was my deer hunting buddy. One of my goals this year was to bag a buck with his deer rifle. Well, last Sun at mid day I jumped a buck, and his Remington 7600 30-06 pump did it's job. Let's just say it was unfinished business for me, and I am feeling pretty good about it. The week earlier my youngest boy baged a buck, now we are working on getting my oldest boy a buck. The shot was a quartering shot, with a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic tip, factory Winchester ammo, and the bullet entered the ribcage midway, and exited between the front chest and shoulder. I was impressed that the ballistic tip did exit. The results were what I have always experienced with larger caliber ballistic tips. At any rate, I just have a real good feeling about the whole thing. If there is a God, my dad is up there smiling right now....

Congratulations on your buck with your dad's gun.

I had no idea the gun season opened so early in N. California. What are the dates and bag limits? Are the buck's antlers still in velvet?

The "A Zone" opened Aug 9th here, and will run til the better part of Sept is over. It has been this way for as long as I can remember. It is a late summer "hot" hunt. The deer are not in velvet, but some will have a bit of it still on their antlers. Last year, my youngest boy's 4 point (8 point for easterners, we only count the side with the most points) still had velvet on the end of about 2 antlers. This is the Western Coastal area in the central to mid northern part of the state. A cold beer after one of these hunts goes down real smooth. These are the Blacktail deer, a smaller version of the Mule Deer. They are smart, elusive, and alot of fun to hunt. Yes,I feel real good about it, just something I felt I wanted to do, my dad would have loved it.

Forgot to mention, you can purchase two A zone tags if you havent purchased any other zone deer tags. Been many years since I bagged a deer with the 30-06, and it was a good reminder to me that it is an awesome deer round.
