The subject of muzzle brakes and hearing damage has got me wondering. What brand /type of ear muffs do you guys use when range shooting? I tend to wear plugs and ear muffs. Last week a couple of guys next to me were putting a 300 Win through its paces. The muzzle blast nearly rolled me sideways and left me with ringing ears for hours.

At the range I wear ear plugs under a set of electronic ear muffs.

I do the same thing you do when at the range, I use the high density faom earplugs from North company and then put my muffs on over them. While hunting I either use my electronic muffs when my daughter doesn't have them or my Walker's game ear. I will always either wait until later or move to another shooting position if someone sits next to me with a muzzle break. I think the fellow was rather rude not to offer to space shots between yours so you can shoot and then move away while your barrel cooled for him to shoot. We do that all the time.

I wear fitted ear plugs under electronic muffs; have found no better protection for me and if a fellow shooter speaks, the muffs will allow me to hear the voice while cancelling the damaging sounds - I try to watch the guys with the muzzle brakes and time my shooting around theirs for two reasons: I'm in no rush at all while at the range, and don't want to endure their muzzle blast - range time for me is a time to relax and work out loads - also, don't forget quality eye protection at all times while shooting.KMule

I am more fortunate than most because my shooting partner has a range set up at his place. Since Idon't have to worry about other shooters ,I just wear a pair of Peltor Tac-7's.

I gave up shooting at a range for the very reason you are talking about. I adopted a habit of ear plugs with over the ear muffs for all my nonhunting shooting. I still have hearing loss, which I did not notice till my wife kept getting mad at me for not listening! Turns out I had drifted into lipreading, and had little trouble comunicating if I could see the lips. Same person, same place, if I could not see the lips, often I was unaware of being spoken to. Mainly female voices. I hear fairly well up to about 2500 Hz, drops off quick after that. I don't shoot near as much as I would like to now, and never at a range. If I knew of one with blast walls separating the stations, I would sure give it a try, with plenty of ear protection of course.

what? speak up man!! say what? cmon now, dont mumble. Muzzle breaks you say? well get it fixed. moron. what? earing aches you say? well dont wear your earring... dummy. I wish these guys would just speak up. its getting so an old man has to shout just to hear himself anymore. sissies. what? wear hearing protection? why, so someone can sneak up on me? crapola, what a jerk. All these guys trying to whisper all the time. What? Do I mind not shooting my muzzle break rifle until you're done? what a sissy, what an inconsiderate sissy,, expecting me to wait for him to stop... Why, this barrel brake thing hardly makes any more noise than my old 06 used to before it started to whisper too. Powders to day are just PC and dont even have the same poop they used to. Say What? man I wish you could enunciate your words better, then maybe a fellow could carry on a conversation with you and see why you are always signing with your hands. And yes I agree, that muzzle break is the number one best. Yes I agree. but I never saw anyone use their middle finger to show me how number one my muzzle break is. see ya later.
