When people say SE Oregon they can be talking about a huge section of the state. From Klamath Falls to the Idaho border from Cal/Nev to almost Bend and Burns. There are alot of pockets of elk in that huge area, but the elk are not everywhere. That has some seriously barren desert. Some good muley's and antelope if you can draw a tag (which I did this year-starts in 10 days ). The elk tend to be in timbered areas near agriculture. Hunting on a private ranch will be a huge advantage. The elk in that area want water and food with some cover if they can get it. I'm really happy for you in that you'll see some increadible land and may have a real chance at a bull. Best of luck. I have a chance to hunt SE oregon for elk the end of Oct. Since my only elk hunting has been in Colorado primarily blackpowder and early rifle, I was hoping for info on the terrain, elevation,expected weather, success rates, etc. All I know about the area is that it's not far from Alturas, California where I hunted deer once over 30 years ago.

I have hunted deer over there. There are Elk over there, but the terrain is rugged and they are in herds.,so they can be seen one minute and twenty miles away the next minute.

If a landowner has it set up for you you may have a leg up,
otherwise as Rogue 6 said, it can be tough hunting, with low results

You must already have a tag or are you hunting with landowner damage tags? I love SE Oregon, but elk numbers are very low. There are some elk there in pockets. If its a do it yourself hunt without scouting you may have a tough time. If you hunting with a guide or a knowledgable local you'll get into the right pockets. Do you know which unit you drew?

This is a hunt that my brother is setting up with a rancher who is a freind of his. Beyond that, I don't know anything except my brother told me it was an over the counter license? The season is the very end of October (27-31). My brother was going to drive up in the next couple of weeks and get the regs.
