I'm going to Colorado (although I would be able to stop over somewhere else if needed) in early July this year. Is it possible to hunt something in the US during those dates? I've done a brief research and, apparently, in Colorado you can only hunt for Buffalo.

Can you please help me on this? Any outfitters suggestions would be most welcome because I'm absolutely lost here.

Many thanks.

I have to be on the 8th in Aspen. My idea is to hunt 2/3 days prior that date. As I'm flying from Madrid, I will have to stop somewhere in between before Denver/Aspen, so it could be Houston as there are direct flight there from Spain.

Texas and Kalifornia have pig hunting. Some exotics in Kalifornia, although I am not too familiar with that particular countries hunting opportunities. Big Grin

Axis in Texas shgould be mostly in hard antler. There are some Sheep species that you can hunt as well. Most sheep will be in their summer coat, except Aoudad, which look the same year round.

Exotics or ferral hogs is about all I can think of. Plenty of places to hunt porkers across the south. Texas has plenty of hig hunting ranches on the net. They are cheap hunts, but exciting and good eating none the less.

For some real fun, I'd suggest hunting them with dogs if your into that type of hunting.

Good Luck

Since you are coming from Spain, look into opportunities in Florida. You can stop off in Miami.

There are some game ranches there that offer Water Buffalo and Axis Deer. They also have a couple of Pigs, last time I checked.

There is a game ranch over by Collbran Colorado named Little Creek Ranch. I've seen a couple of ads for them. They advertise hogs, several types of sheep, ibex, fallow deer, buffalo etc... I believe they hunt year round on the place.

I can't answer any specific questions on the place since I've never set foot on it. A web search should give you their contact info.

Joe O'Bannon of J & R Outfitters, and there is the Brady Ranch.

I know nothing about these two, so do your homework if you plan on booking a hunt there! These are just names I have heard, nobody that I do business with.

There is always prarie dogs and jack rabbits to consider. Not exactly trophy game, but a good way to expereince part of the American west. And the price is generally about right also!

You'll need to hunt with someone who can supply the rifle, as the U.S. is about the most hunter-unfriendly country in the world to non-residents. We are incredibly ego-centric, thinking that we should be able to take our guns anywhere in the world we want (and we mostly can), but that people coming here have no excuse for a gun and have to jump through impossible hoops if they want to add one gun to the 200 Million that are already here. Go figure.

Texas is probably your best bet for prolific and fairly economical hunting of feral hogs and various exotics. However, be forewarned that July can be (make that WILL be) brutally hot and doesn't make for the most pleasant hunting atmosphere. I would recommend looking in the Kerrville area of the Texas Hill country. There are also a few places south of San Antonio that offer such hunting.

Prairie dog "hunting" is something that I enjoy, but it is "shooting" rather than "hunting". If you enjoy shooting a couple of hundred rounds in a day at challenging little targets, you might like to try it. Professional guides (part-timers, of course) are available who could take you to eastern Colorado, western Kansas, or Nebraska, all of which are within reasonable driving distance of Denver. You would, of course, have to find a guide who would provide the guns and ammunition.

Regardless of whether you hunt or not, do take advantage of being in Denver to explore the Rockies for a day or two. You'll see some spectacular scenery. An hour and a half from Denver is Rocky Mountain National Park (near the town of Estes Park). If you enjoy seeing big game, the Elk and the Bighorn sheep there make for some delightful close-up viewing.

Perhaps your best bet is to simply see if anyone here on AR would like to host you to a hunt. I have nothing to offer you in July, but I would think that someone here would be delighted to have a European guest to hunt with.

I hope you enjoy your visit!

Stonecreek, it is not quite as bad as that.... I for one also sorely miss the days when you could show up at the US border with your rifle, and that was it. Since everybody inside the border had a rifle, what harm could could another one do.... thumb

Well,, 9/11 took care of that, so now you do have to deal with some red tape to bring along your own rifle. But it is not quite as bad as "impossible"....

You download and fill out this form:

http://www.mynssa.com/image/downloads/f53303d.pdf

Then you need *any* valid US hunting license - regardless of whether you intend to hunt in the state issuing it or not. If you don't have a license planned already, something like a "Furbearer & Non-Game" license from the ND website:

http://gf.nd.gov/licenses/nonres.html

should do the trick for $25....

Then send form and copy of license to ATF (as noted on the form) 6-8 weeks in advance, and presto, they'll fax back your temporary importation license, which you present at the border together with your hunting license.

A pain in the posterior?? Absolutely! But not quite as bad as "impossible"....

MHO,

Great info for would-be foreign hunters in the U.S. You are right -- bringing your own gun and ammunition is not impossible, but the bureaucratic morass of paper work and 6-8 week lead time is certainly discouraging.

If hunting Texas, you have three non-resident license choices: General ($300), good for all game August 31, 2007 through August 31, 2008; Special ($125), good only for exotics, feral hogs, and other "non game" animals (varmints), or 5-day special ($45), good for the same as special but only for a specific 5 days. The 5-day special is obviuosly what you need, but you would have to make sure that the ATF would accept it. It might be simpler to spend the extra money for the full-year license. Here is the link for Texas Parks and Wildlife:

Agree! Pity it has come to this.

Many thanks to you all guys for your kind posts.

I think that Texas or Miami are the best options.

I'll have a look and see what I find.
