Getting real close to putting my deposit down for a Musk Ox hunt next spring up in Canada's Northwest Territory. Any of you guys ever hunt for them up there? Any good information to pass along?

A guy named Rob R. posts sometimes on handgunhunt.com. He took a nice 'ox and posted the pics. I think they're still there. He seems like a great guy and would probably be a wealth of info.....he seems to hunt ALOT. Good luck. Gary.

A good friend took a Musk Ox in Nunavut last year. He saw lots, and hunting was via snowmobile in April.

Hunting Musk Ox is not much of a "hunt' but is more of an experience. The hunt I went on last spring was on Nunivak Island in Alaska, so things might be a little diferent in the area where you would go. But generally the hunting involves dressing very warm, loading up a snowmachine and sled, and heading out looking for the musk ox. Generally it isn't to hard to see a big brown animal in the midst of total white. They will bunch up in defense which works great against wolves but not so good against a man with a rifle. The real challenge at that point is getting the one you want clear of the others so you don't shoot more than one. I approached the group of 6 bulls I took mine out of to about 25 yards, although I backed off trying to get a shot on the best one.
My hunt was one day in 20 below weather with a breeze, we took off at 9 a.m. and returned about 10:30 p.m. and covered about 120 miles. Make sure they have a snowmachine for you to ride. I wouldn't want to be bounced around in a sled - I have heard some horror stories. Also, I think you have the option at two musk ox in Canada. Don't shoot the first ones you see unless the guide swears on his mother's life that it is a B&C animal. I would make sure that I looked at a few just to see what it was thatI wanted.
Hunting musk ox was a neat experience, but I will only do it once.
