Hello from Iraq.

If I happen to make it home alive, it's looking like late December before I hit the States.

I have talked to Ann (Horsman) about finding me a cancellation hunt for something when I get back -- but I'm wondering, that late in the year, would there be any hunts available for elk, mule deer, or whitetail deer, in January, for which I could find a cancellation hunt... AND buy a "last-minute" tag? Would there be any likelihood of coming across such cancellations? I've never paid much attention to such "late" hunts, so I honestly don't know.

Hope all is well with all of you.

Godspeed.

Russ

Russ,

Alabamas deer season runs till the end of January. Our rut doesn't start until around the first of January. The last 2 weeks of December and the first two weeks of January is our best hunting. Email me if you need more info and I can help you.

Russ,

I'll have to look it up, but I believe there is a handgun season for whitetail here in Illinois in January. If there is and you are so inclined, you are welcome to come visit and hunt here as my guest. I'm not at home now so I'll look it up and post it later as to what the season is.

Gun season is generally the first weekend in December, I think that will be a little early for you but let me know if you could swing that.(Actually here in Illinois the 2 weekends is the one before and the one after Thanksgiving)

Regards,

Mark

Wow.

I'm sitting here getting a tad misty-eyed. Thanks, guys. Really.

You know, I've lost an uncle (we shared the same birthday) since I've been here, and I lost a good friend to cancer about a month ago (poor guy just couldn't give up cigarettes -- tried patches, programs, everything... repeatedly, not just one time... finally lost a lung, then died anyway three weeks later). Besides the mortar attacks and occasional snipers where I'm at, I also read the daily intel reports. I know what's going on throughout the theater... which is much more than I think you folks hear about on CNN.

So... I get pretty down, most of the time. Just the nature of the beast by being here, I guess.

Then... I read such kind offers. I just don't know what to say... except "thank you." That's all I know to say. "Thank you."

MarkWhite: I'm an Illinois resident (God, I'd sure love a thunderstorm or something right now... and some GREEN GRASS), so I know the Nov/Dec seasons. I was hoping to make the second gun season, but... I don't think that's going to happen. I can't remember on the handgun hunts but, if I can apply "at the last minute," I'd be up for one in January, if I'm back in time.

JohnTheGreek: You realize, of course, I've wanted to hunt cougars for a LONG time! I also know Utah is a good state for some of the bigger lions in the United States. I'm definitely interested.

Mark R. Dobrenski: I've wanted to hunt coyotes for years! I certainly have the right hardware for it. Montana is also my favorite state (yes, even over Illinois)!

Mark 6.5x55mm: I've never been fortunate enough to gun hunt for deer during the rut. When I've gotten out, it's always after the rut. That sounds very inviting and I will get back to you on that. Thank you.

DW Hunter: I got your PM and replied. I'll check the picture of your deer camp when I can and drop you another line.

Again, guys... really, thanks. I'm very moved by such kind offers. I don't know that I can do them all right after I get back, but I'd sure like to do at least one or two of them.

Maybe I could fit the rest of you guys in later??? [Cool]

Seriously... hunters are the best people. You guys are great.

There isn't a damn thing to hunt over here -- well, other than the obvious. I'd give anything to see a deer or a wild boar or SOMETHING! God, how I miss my country... its people and its hunting.

May God bless all of you.

Most sincerely,

Russ

DW Hunter:

I was able to pull up the pictures of your deer camp. I met Craig on a prairie-dog shoot in Malta, Montana, in 1995. He liked my T-shirt, he said. ("Marine Sniper") I met Ron Coburn at another prairie-dog shoot in Valentine, Nebraska, in 1996. He liked the trigger job I'd done on my 112BVSS, formerly a .22-250 Remington but rechambered to Ackley Improved. He kept trying to get the gun to "fire" (dry) when it was off safe. It wouldn't. He was impressed, which impressed me. He kept beating the rifle every which way, trying to get it to go off. I said, nicely, "It works better if you just pull the trigger." Nice guy. I sure wish those Accu-Triggers could be retrofit to the older guns. << sigh >>

I couldn't help noticing... is that a recent picture of Craig and Ron? I believe Craig is wearing his DCU boots... the same ones I've been wearing since I've been here.

I'd love to take you up on your offer to hunt in Texas. I don't need a 36-point rack or anything... just something that looks remotely like a deer with antlers would tickle me pink. Thanks, and stay in touch.

Godspeed.

Russ

Russ,

Those pictures were taken about 2 months ago. Ironically they are the only ones I have ever taken of the camp. [Smile] aside from game shots in the field. Hang on to my numbers and give me a call when you get back home and we will see what we can put together.Keep me posted on your schedule and perhaps I can arrange a hunt for something else with the guys in the photos as we are talking about doing another hunt somewhere with our guys.

Russ,

There are some great areas here in the SE part of Utah. If you decide to do this, let me know and I will put you in for the draw areas around here. If you don't draw, there are a couple of quota areas bordering the draw units that still produce some nice cats. Feel free to email me if you are interested. This old outfitter is the last of the old world houndmen and is quite a character. Runs a fun hunt as long as you are prepared to walk your a$$ off! [Smile]

Best,

JohnTheGreek

Russ,

Where are you from in Illinois?

If you are located in the Northern or Central part of the state, I offer some quail and pheasant. I belong to a hunt club, have my own pointer and a spare 12 ga. So, when you get back, if you want to spend a few hours chasing pheasants, quail and chukars, let me know.

I will be happy to set up the day. I know the dog will love it as well. I would include a goose hunt, but the season closed early last year in the northern and central zones. But if it is open, we may be able to hunt some goose as well.

Pete

Russ, I wouldn't get too worked up about hunting the rut in Alabama. It is not like the rut in the northern states. Our buck to doe rate is way off, like 1:8 or more in some parts of the state. But we do take a few good 130 class to 150 class deer a year. Doe tags shouldn't be a problem [Smile] I normaly take 3 to 5 deer a year, 2 to 3 doe and 1 or 2 OK bucks. Most of the deer taken are in the 90 to 110 class, but its hunting and we have a good time. Follow the link to my photos of some Alabama deer. I don't do it but I know some guys who still make deer drives with dogs. If you've never done it, it maybe something you'd like to try. Anyway if you'd like to know more email me.

John: I sent you an E-mail, but it bounced. If you wish, you can send one to me via a private message. I'm interested.

Quail Wing: I haven't hunted, or eaten, quail for over 20 years! This is awful, because I love doing both! I was born in Galesburg, Illinois, but I live in the Quad Cities now. (Well, technically, "now" I live in Iraq... not that I'd really call it "living," though. Beats being dead, however.) I'd love to get back into quail hunting.

Okay, back to work for me.

Thanks, everyone. You guys are really terrific. This is all more than I could ever have imagined. Sure gives a guy inspiration and hope.

Take care.

Russ

I don't have any contacts for you, but the elk landowner tags in New Mexico are good through March, I think. They aren't usually cheap, though I've seen some being advertised as discounted due to cancellations.

When do elk start shedding their racks?

Yes, I'd think as elk hunts go, a cancellation would be my best bet at affording one. I guess they're not bugling and such during that time, but the bugling would just be icing on the cake for me, where an elk hunt is concerned.

Today is my birthday. I'd rather be hunting... animals.

Godspeed, all.

Calif Hunter is/was right. The New Mexico landowner tags used to be good through March. They have shortened them to Oct 18- Jan 31. Which would still fit your schedule.

They will keep their racks well through the end of the season.

Not much fun shooting a big Bull ELk if he left his headgear off in the forest somewhere, huh? [Wink]

Well, um... I realize I'm not really in a position to be picky these days, but, um... I'm kind of leaning toward "no." [Cool]

Live (thankfully) from Iraq,
